Dismantling of the West Chimney over the main entrance of St Michael’s Mount Castle. Of the four granite chimneys on the West front this was the tallest. Unfortunately, it was damaged in ferocious Storm Goretti which hit St Michael’s Mount with wind speeds of 111mph. The chimney will be carefully rebuilt under the guidance of Structural Engineer Paul Carpenter and in collaboration with the Conservation Officer, Historic England, St Aubyn Estates and the National Trust to ensure a suitable reconstruction is undertaken on the iconic castle.

Not Just Houses! Chelsea Award Winning Garden Design Too.....

PCA are thrilled that Darren Hawkes is celebrating a well-deserved Gold for Best Construction of a Show Garden at the Chelsea Flower Show with his design for The Lady Garden Foundation’s ā€˜Silent No More’ garden.

Darren approached PCA to assist with the engineering of the structural aspects which are integral to the garden, and we were only too happy to assist.

Bespoke design is something we often encounter when building houses, however bringing Darren’s vision to life presented its own design challenges. Our engineer Scott reveals the technical aspects of our design:

ā€œWe began by making a 3D model of all the primary structures to sensibly size and position the main plywood ribs, we also had to make sure the main structures were split into modules that could be easily fixed together on site. The lifting bars needed to be correctly positioned so that the structures did not wobble and could be moved easily by crane into their final positions.

Most people will not realise that the stone paths are made up of pallet sized prefabricated steel elements with the stone bedded on top. The pallets needed to be robust enough that when lifted with a forklift truck they would not distort, which would cause cracks in the stone and mortar. The pallet system allowed the path to be constructed on site quickly with only the edging stones and joints to be mortared in situ, this significantly speeded up construction on site.ā€

We feel honoured to have played a role behind the scenes in the success of this wonderful garden and are looking forward to seeing it in person on Friday.

Local businesses threw their energy behind this project, and a busy summer saw the clubhouse start to take shape. Kingsbridge RFC now has an extended facility that befits the needs of a very busy rugby club that supports five senior teams and 13 junior teams for boys and girls, while offering additional space that can be used to generate hospitality income.

It’s the end of an era; our PR guru Caroline Moore is off to head up all things PR related at Exeter Chiefs. We are incredibly grateful for her expertise and guidance over the past 11 years, including her patience when extracting information from our engineers! We will miss her but wish her all the best in her new role!

With former players among the staff and strong family connections to the club, PCA has been a long-term supporter of Kingsbridge RFC for many years.

After lending their expertise to the original build of the clubhouse, PCA’s services were called upon again when Kingsbridge RFC decided to embark on an ambitious project to extend the same clubhouse.

National Apprenticeship Week & Welcome Oscar!

To celebrate National Apprenticeship Week, we would like to introduce our apprentice, Oscar Hallam. Oscar has been with PCA since September last year and is studying for a degree in civil engineering at the University of Exeter alongside working at PCA.

Oscarā€˜s highlights so far include:

šŸŒ Having the best of both worlds - attending University & working at PCA with no two days being the same.

āœļø Gaining experience in both engineering & technical drawing using CAD.

🄾 Visits to site – his favourite so far being an extensive remodel of a house overlooking the Salcombe Estuary.

šŸ’” Having experienced engineers on hand to answer questions and give current real life examples.

Oscar is looking forward to building his knowledge base to a point he is able to work independently on projects.

We hope you will join us in welcoming Oscar!

PCA was delighted to work on this heritage-led regeneration project in Redruth. The Buttermarket was saved from disrepair using materials sourced on site or reclaimed from other Cornish buildings. It's now home to six kitchens, a bar, coffee shop, retail, flexible workspace, and gallery space.
