This is the Pacific Orca jack up barge installation vessel built in 2012.

The Orca is owned by Swire Blue Ocean A/S and is 160m in length with a payload of 6,600t.

When designed, the standard offshore turbine was the Siemens 3.6MW. The Orca has a capability of up to 12 of these wind turbines making it a game changing vessel.

But, as always in wind, things get bigger.

Currently under construction is the Voltaire, a Jan De Nul vessel which will enter service in 2022.

When the vessel has its legs fully extended and the crane at full height, it will measure 325 metres tall – taller than the Eiffel Tower.

The Voltaire can carry a Payload of 14,000t, a full 7,400t more than the Orca.

The Voltaire is also 21m longer than the Orca at 181.78 m.

The Voltaire will enter service in 2022 and is already chartered to install 87 GE Haliade-X 14 MW turbines on the Dogger Bank C wind farm.

In a decade we have gone from cutting edge vessels installing 3.6MW turbines to 14MW turbines.

But as we have said, in wind things always get bigger.

Orsted have stated they are aiming for 27MW turbines for the Swedish Skåne Havsvindpark.

With the scale up in size happening this quickly it’s mind boggling to think what the next generation of jack ups will be capable of.

Dunmaglass wind farm near Inverness in Scotland is SSE’s highest altitude windfarm at 700m above sea level.

Dunmaglass is certainly one of the most challenging onshore farms TRG work on. With this altitude in the Scottish highlands there is plenty of snow and high winds to contend with.

There are 33 X GE 2.85MW wind turbines installed.
