A fire service carried out today highlights the importance of having a full strip service on an open flued fire attached to a chimney.
Two vacuums full and a bag of twigs later the fire is now back to being safe to use for the customer.

Just a quick reminder, as the temperatures are around zero degrees at the moment the risk of the condensate pipe on your boiler freezing is a lot higher.
Always check, and if possible pour a kettle of boiling water over the external condensate pipe before calling someone out to take a look.

It's that time of the year again.

If your boiler has suddenly stopped working, is showing an error code, and/or gurgling, chances are you have a frozen condensate pipe.

Modern condensing boilers create water vapour that drains away via a pipe known as a condensate pipe. Often these are installed externally and terminate into a drain, drain pipe, or soil stack. This leaves them at risk of freezing when we experience spells of extreme cold weather.

You can rectify the issue yourself and save costly repair bills by boiling a kettle, and pouring it along the condensate pipe outside until you melt and clear the ice from inside the pipe.

You may also need to reset the boiler via the reset button on the front display to get it to work again.

A recent boiler swap done for a customer.

A full powerflush was done, along with fitting thermostatic radiator valves to all radiators, and fitting a Hive smart thermostat to modernise the heating system.

The customer now has a far more efficient system with a long 10 year warranty on the boiler.

A disintegrated burner seal on a Worcester boiler found recently during a routine service. This can cause products of combustion to leak back into the combustion chamber and be reburned potentially creating carbon monoxide.

It highlights the value of having your gas appliances serviced regularly.

A powerflush was recently undertaken for a customer complaining of several radiators not working, and several radiators giving poor heat output. Infrared pictures were taken before and after which show the build up of sludge caused by really poor water quality, and the subsequent restoration of the system to full working order.

Unfortunately due to cost increases involved in running a business combined with the cost of living crisis, there will be a slight increase in the price of work, effective from Monday 10th July onwards.

I've tried to hold off from the increase as I understand it's a difficult time for everyone but it's becoming unsustainable to try to run a business at the current rates.

Prices as of 10th July will be as follows:
Annual service/Homeowner Certificate/Landlord Gas Safety Certificate - £50
Additional appliance service - £25
Hourly labour - £50
Half hour labour - £30

Another example of the importance of regular servicing.

The fan flue seal had deteriorated to the point of no longer sealing the flue exhaust duct from the internals of the boiler, and therefore allowing products of combustion to mix with clean air causing incorrect combustion.

A new seal was promptly ordered and fitted on a return visit, enabling the boiler to operate safely and efficiently.

A job done several months back.

Signs of damp on the customer's wall, along with the neighbour's wall.

Access was made to expose the old lead pipes, which were then chopped out and remade using lead to copper fittings.

A straight swap of an old water tank for a new efficient Gledhill Combination unit carried out for a customer last week.
Pipework was adjusted to suit and then lagged as per regulations.
