A lovely old postbox heading back to its customer today after being fully stripped, cleaned up and finished with hand-painted gold lettering.

These things are seriously built to last — although I’m still not quite sure why they need to weigh quite so much! 😅

Another nice restoration finished and ready for many more years of use.

A proper bit of history through the workshop 👌

These huge doors came from Leeds Town Hall — each one is around 11ft high, 3 inches thick and weighs roughly 150kg.

Not exactly your average front door! Jobs like this take a bit more handling, but it’s always great working on original architectural pieces with this much character and history.

A bit different from the usual doors and furniture…

This traditional cast iron post box came into us needing a complete overhaul. We stripped it right back, cleaned and prepared the metalwork, dealt with the years of old coatings and corrosion, then refinished it in a hard-wearing gloss black.

Jobs like this are always satisfying because all the original detail starts to come back once decades of paint have been removed — especially around the lettering, mouldings and crown.

We don’t just strip doors. We can also restore gates, railings, garden furniture, architectural ironwork and unusual heritage pieces like this.

Another one brought back to life and ready for many more years of service.

😲 Today’s pleasant surprise…

We get plenty of old fireplaces through the workshop, but every now and again something turns up that makes you wonder why on earth anyone ever painted it!

Underneath the layers of later paint on this one is a Victorian marbleised slate fire surround, probably dating from around 1870–1895.

These were made from slate but decorated to imitate much more expensive marble. The dark green and black finish, cream and orange veining, fine gold lines and little decorative motifs were all deliberately created as part of the original finish. The surface would originally have been polished to give it a deep, glossy, almost marble-like appearance.

Over 130 years later, a surprising amount of that original decoration is still hiding underneath. 👀

Even better, the entire surround is complete and the slate itself is unchipped, so rather than stripping everything back to bare slate, the challenge now is going to be carefully revealing and preserving as much of that original Victorian finish as possible.

Just look at the green marble effect and gold detailing appearing from underneath the later coatings. 🤩

Why would anybody ever have painted over this?! 😂

This should be a very satisfying restoration.

⛪ A proper transformation for this church door! 🚪✨

This one came to us from the Church of the Ascension in Hull, looking very different to how it left!

We handled the full job from start to finish:

🔧 Removed the door from site
🧪 Stripped away the old layers of paint
🪵 Revealed the original timber underneath
🚐 Returned it to the church
🔩 Refitted it back into its original opening

The before photos really don’t give much away about what was hiding underneath, but once stripped the character of the timber came straight back through. A huge improvement and another original door saved rather than replaced.

We’re increasingly carrying out this kind of work for churches, listed buildings, heritage properties and commercial premises, including removal and refitting where required.

🪵 What do you do when a customer wants old lead-painted doors stripped back to natural timber… but also wants to minimise any exposure to lead residue left behind? 👀

That was the brief on this recent job — and simply stripping the paint off wasn’t going to be enough.

These doors went through a much more involved process than usual:

🔹 Professionally stripped and fully neutralised
🔹 Progressively sanded down to 240 grit
🔹 Tested for lead after preparation
🔹 Sealed with Zinsser SealCoat
🔹 Tested again to monitor the reduction
🔹 Coated with Polyvine Heavy Duty Polyurethane Satin Clear
🔹 Carefully flatted with 800 grit to remove the nibs
🔹 Finally finished with Polyvine Heavy Duty Polyurethane Dead Flat

🧪 We checked the surface for lead as the work progressed and saw the indication reduce through the different stages. Once the complete finishing system was applied, our final surface check gave no indication of lead in the area tested.

But there was another challenge…

The customer still wanted the doors to look like natural stripped timber, rather than shiny varnished doors. The final dead-flat coating gave us exactly that — a very natural appearance while creating a tough, sealed and wipeable surface that should stand up brilliantly to life in a busy family home. 💪🚪

The transformation is pretty impressive, especially when you see how much character and grain had been hiding underneath years of paint.

Remember when Nitromors actually worked?

A lot of people still remember the old stuff — thick, aggressive, and capable of shifting layers of paint without much fuss.

Modern Nitromors is a very different product, and there’s a reason so many people now say it doesn’t work like it used to.

A little bit of British furniture history in the workshop 🇬🇧🪑

These two chairs might not look particularly special at first glance – especially after somebody decided they’d look better covered in white paint – but they’re actually Ercol Model 478 Tall Back Easy Chairs, designed by Ercol founder Lucian R. Ercolani.

The 478 was introduced in 1962 and is a proper piece of British mid-century design. Its distinctive tall “double bend” spindle back was designed to support a shaped back cushion and give the comfort of a traditional wing chair, but with the light, elegant construction Ercol became famous for.

Unlike many classic Ercol chairs which combine elm and beech, the 478 was made from solid beech throughout, with a webbed seat supporting the original loose foam cushions.

The Ercol catalogue of 1965 describes it as the “478 Double Bend Tall Back Easy Chair”, Registered Design No. 905,007.

And this is exactly why we love stripping old furniture. Under decades of paint and finish is some beautifully made solid timber that deserves to be seen again.

The chair on the right has already revealed that lovely beech underneath; the other one is next…

Restored examples can retail at around £400–£500 each — which is a good reminder why it’s sometimes worth finding out what’s underneath the paint before replacing old furniture.
