BRIDPORT ANCHORING – STABILISING A FAILING EMBANKMENT
In Bridport, a roadside embankment had begun to fail under the pressure of the road above, threatening to collapse into a residential garden below. Traditional retaining methods would have meant excavation, shuttering and concrete – slow, disruptive and costly.

“Save two to three months on traditional methods of installing concrete retaining walls, no excavations, muck away, design and construction – design it, bore it = carbon saving time, up to 120 years design life.”

This project was sourced and managed by Umberslade, who invited Platipus® Anchors to provide material costs and an initial technical assessment.

A full road closure was required to carry out the works safely. Constructing a conventional retaining wall would have required a much longer closure period – potentially double or even triple the duration of our installation – causing major disruption to residents and traffic.

As approved installers of the Platipus® Earth Anchoring System, Umberslade delivered a fast, low-impact stabilisation using percussive-driven earth anchors. Anchors were installed with lightweight drilling rigs, load-locked, and tensioned to immediately secure the slope.

Across the surface, we laid Geosynthetics Ltd 150 mm deep 3D cellular confinement system Strataweb, with soil compacted into the cells, then finished with Enkamat 7018 to encapsulate the soil and promote vegetation regrowth.

The entire works were completed within a two-week period, providing a strong, durable, and environmentally sensitive solution. Early assessments indicate the approach could deliver up to a 93% reduction in embodied carbon compared to a traditional retaining wall (confirmation to follow from Platipus®).

This project demonstrates how modern ground engineering techniques can reduce disruption, shorten programme time, and significantly cut carbon impact while achieving long-term stability.

UMBERSLADE CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN ITS ESTABLISHED GROUND ANCHORING CAPABILITY

Umberslade continues to strengthen its established ground anchoring capability, with recent refresher and advancement training reinforcing best practice across both experienced teams and new operatives working with Platipus® ground anchoring systems.

The session ensured Umberslade’s Platipus® Approved Installers remain fully aligned with current technical guidance and installation standards, while formally integrating additional trained operatives into the Umberslade Approved Installers list. This approach ensures consistent delivery, resilience of capacity, and continuity across live projects nationwide.

Training revisited the core principles of ground and earth anchoring, including ground behaviour, load paths, anchor selection, installation depth, orientation, and safety-critical considerations. This was followed by structured field installation of Platipus® Percussion Driven Earth Anchors (PDEA®), using controlled percussion-driven techniques, with precision drilling employed where required to suit varying ground conditions. All installations were completed with tensioning and proof loading to verify performance in line with specification requirements.

Umberslade’s ground anchoring services are already embedded across a range of live environments, including embankment stabilisation and floating solar panel anchoring on reservoirs. These projects demonstrate the practical advantages of earth anchor installations in situations where traditional foundations would be impractical, disruptive, or environmentally constrained.

TIME CRITCAL STRIP-OUT AT MARKET HOUSE, MAIDENHEAD

We are currently delivering a time-critical project at Market House in Maidenhead, working to a very tight programme where speed and control are everything. The process is engineered for momentum from the moment we arrive on site. No wasted motion, no slow traditional carting of materials, and no delays between floors.

We are stripping everything back to a true bare shell. Ceilings, lighting, flooring, partitions, stud walls, electrics, containment, HVAC, ductwork, fixtures, fittings, every element is being removed with a workflow designed for pace.

A full scaffold chute system is in place so gravity does the heavy lifting, moving material directly from each floor into a waiting team of pre-organised skips. Materials are separated at source to maximise reuse and recycling and to keep the waste zone constantly flowing.

Our teams are working in a coordinated floor-by-floor sweep, maintaining continuous movement throughout the building. Time is money for the client, and this approach keeps the project moving at full speed with Snag-Zero discipline embedded in everything we do.

Market House is well on its way back to a clean, open structural shell, and the project is tracking exactly where it needs to be.

Umberslade Robotic Demolition. Tight fit. Brindley Place.

Concrete structures are getting tougher, and access is getting tighter. That’s why Umberslade Diamond Drilling & Sawing Limited has invested in robotic demolition technology that combines hydraulic power with remote precision to operate safely in spaces where conventional plant cannot.

Using a BROKK robotic demolition unit, our team recently completed the removal of internal reinforced concrete floors in Brindleyplace, Birmingham. These floors were heavily reinforced and built to last, presenting the kind of challenge that rewards control and planning. The BROKK delivered the hydraulic force of a five-tonne excavator while still passing through a standard doorway and operating safely on suspended slabs without overloading the structure.

All work was carried out inside a live environment surrounded by occupied offices. Our operators controlled the BROKK remotely, breaking out and removing dense reinforced sections with millimetre precision. Noise, dust and vibration were managed through Hilti extraction and monitoring systems, keeping the workspace clean and safe.

Because BROKK units are electrically powered, they produce no exhaust emissions, making them ideal for indoor demolition, refurbishment, and structural alteration projects. The process integrates seamlessly with our other services, including diamond drilling, track sawing, and wire sawing, allowing us to safely and efficiently isolate and remove concrete sections.

Phase Two of the DHL Strip Out project is now progressing at full pace following the successful completion of Phase One, where our team safely dismantled extensive warehouse racking systems under live site conditions.

This stage brings in our heavy-duty high-reach shears, making light work of the towering racking that once filled the warehouse. On the ground, our drilling team continues the meticulous removal of thousands of floor bolts, while gas-cutting crews safely and efficiently section the steel rails for recycling.

All equipment on site is fitted with rubber tracks to prevent damage to the concrete flooring and maintain the integrity of the slab throughout the operation. Extracted materials are carefully separated on site and removed using our own fleet of skips and bulkers, delivered by a local recycling company, ensuring smooth logistics, no delays, and complete material traceability.

This coordinated process showcases Umberslade’s expertise in large-scale industrial strip-out and logistics centre strip-out projects. Every phase is precisely planned, sequenced and delivered by our in-house teams to maintain safety, pace and control throughout.
