Sir Robert Geffery's School and Community Farm

Sir Robert Geffery's School and Community Farm The School and Community Farm of Sir Robert Geffery's Primary School It was about 5 foot high in bracken and brambles.

Back in about 2002, the Worshipful Company of Ironmongers gave the school a 2 acre field next to the school. Jan Berryman suggested that pigs would be good to clear the ground and our first Alice was moved in. From there we decided to keep the pig and start a school farm. We now have the field split into about ten stock proof paddocks, with outdoor learning areas, a polytunnel, solar heated hot wa

ter for handwashing, water plumbed throught the field for drinkers and watering and a fenced area for the hens and ducks. Plus some Guinea Pigs and some resident natural rabbits!

Walk to School Day - Thursday 18th June.

As part of Health and Safety Week, our Eco Committee have been looking at traffic reduction in tandem with getting more exercise. They would like to increase the number of children walking, cycling or scooting to school - at least from the end of the road to avoid the congestion. They understand that many children cannot walk as they live far away and, with this in mind, have suggested the following:

πŸ‘Ÿ Children can wear trainers to school for the day to mark it as a special opportunity to celebrate alternative travel.

πŸ›΄ All children who park their bikes or scooters (with a helmet) on the bike racks are eligible to receive the 'Golden Padlock'. πŸ”’ This will be placed on a random scooter/bike and will win an instant prize!

πŸšΆπŸ»β€β™€οΈπŸšΆπŸΌβ€β™‚οΈ A 'Walking Bus' will meet children at the pub at 8:30am on Thursday. This will involve school staff (in high vis) meeting children and walking them down to school together. Parents can park in the pub car park/square area or simply pull up and drop off at 8:30! We will leave at 8:35am, so please be there by then if you would like to join in.

A gentle reminder to everyone visiting our school farm at weekends: children are very welcome to enjoy the farm, but they MUST be accompanied by a responsible adult at ALL times.

The rules we have in place are there for the safety and wellbeing of both children and animals. Farms are wonderful places to learn, explore and connect with nature, but they can also present hazards if proper supervision is not provided.

We want our community farm to be a place that everyone can enjoy and take pride in. By following these guidelines, we can ensure that visits remain safe, positive and enjoyable for all.

Thank you for your understanding and support in helping us keep our farm a safe space for our whole community.

We Need You! πŸ™πŸ»

We are really struggling for volunteers over weekends and school holidays to have the farm rota covered.

The fate and welfare of the farm animals does rely on families coming along for an hour during the morning, out of term time, to feed and water the animals and make sure hutches are clean.

Full instructions are emailed so no specific experience is required.

Please consider booking yourselves in to visit Polly, the guinea pigs, the hens and the sheep and keep our farm going.

Reception class braved the rain showers yesterday afternoon to visit the Farm. 🌧️

They stopped in on the chickens to check out the fantastic range of coloured eggs; gave the new bird feeder a quick top up; planted out some sweetcorn 🌽 seedlings into the no-dig bed, taking care not to disturb the roots and spotted pea pods forming too! πŸ«›

Well done Reception - hopefully the sunshine will come back soon to help it all grow!

Another brilliant Farm to Fork after school club yesterday, where children took farm lettuce and eggs, locally sourced flour and yogurt to make flatbreads, and created a tasty, seasonal, low food mile snack!

They even headed home with a pot of dough to show off their new cooking skills to their families. πŸ₯™

A tasty afternoon on the Farm for some of the Reception children today, who went to the Allotment to explore all the items growing that we can eat! 🍽️

We found early signs of plums, strawberries, onions and potatoes and found some yummy lettuce too. Food miles...?? About 30cm! πŸ˜‰πŸ₯¬

It's been another jam packed week on the Farm, with Year 1 w**ding the KS1 no dig beds and picking fresh greens for the animals; Year 3 cleaning out the guinea pig hutches; Farm to Fork club planting marigolds to attract the pollinators and tasting freshly picked radishes and Reception children making a support and planting out the first of their pea seedlings! 🌱

Not to mention Year 4, who have taken on the daily Farm duties this week too.

So much happening on a daily basis, well done everyone! πŸ’š
