This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Howard Civil Engineering is reminding everyone across our sites and offices that breast cancer doesn't only affect women - men can get breast cancer too.

Because we all have breast tissue, it's vital for everyone to know what's normal for their body, feel their chest regularly for changes, and speak to a GP right away if anything seems unusual. Look out for yourself and your colleagues by keeping the conversation going on site.

If you or someone you know needs support, advice, or further information, please reach out to these resources:

NHS: Contact your local GP practice directly if you notice any unusual changes.

A huge congratulations to Hayley Ashton on winning Management Apprentice of the Year - Quantity Surveying at the Leeds College of Building BIG Awards! 👏

Since joining Howard Civil Engineering as a Pre-Construction Apprentice in August 2024, Hayley has demonstrated outstanding commitment and talent - achieving distinctions in her Level 4 qualification while making significant contributions to key projects, including the £1.9m SDEC facility at Airedale General Hospital.

This marks the second consecutive year an HCE apprentice has been honoured at the BIG Awards, following Daniel Heffernan’s success last year.

As a company, we are deeply passionate about nurturing talent, training individuals, and empowering our team to reach their full potential. This achievement also highlights our longstanding relationship with Leeds College of Building, a partnership we are extremely proud of as we continue to invest in the next generation of construction leaders.

"Winning this award is well deserved and recognises the effort she puts into developing her skills. We’re proud to support Hayley as she progresses in her career."

- Peter Howard, Pre-Construction Director

A fantastic milestone and thoroughly deserved. Well done, Hayley!

In conjunction with the Environment Agency (EA) and Canal & River Trust (CRT), HCE have recently undertaken works to upgrade an existing Headwall flowing into the River Aire, Leeds as part of the Skelton Grange scheme.

After various discussions with both EA and CRT, a safe system of works where agreed and a suitable design formulated, Permits where then issued which allowed HCE to work on the live water course, Works involved forming a new concrete base and stone pitching, new Handrails for safety reasons and a new Valve Gate installed for water flow.

This Existing Surface Water Headwall has been upgraded as part of the overall improvement to the Drainage system for Skelton Grange project.

On World Mental Health Day, Howard Civil Engineering is highlighting the vital importance of mental well-being across the construction and civil engineering sector and within our wider communities.

Caring for our workforce is a main priority, which is why our SHEQ Manager, Andrew, leads a dedicated team of trained Mental Health First Aiders who provide confidential support across our sites.

Alongside hosting visits from Andys Man Club and vital training sessions through the Lighthouse Charity, we ensure no worker or family faces a crisis alone. Beyond our sites, our partnership with
The Howarth Foundation helps individuals experiencing homelessness secure meaningful employment - restoring purpose, independence, and long-term mental health.

Today, we encourage everyone to check in on a colleague, break down stigma, and start a simple conversation that could make all the difference.

If you or someone you know is struggling, reach out to your on-site first aiders, call 0345 605 1956, or text HARDHAT to 85258 for confidential support.

Last month, our site team on the Joseph Norton project partnered with Wates Group and local residents for an incredible community effort in Deighton.

What began as a plan for a quick afternoon litter pick turned into a full-week operation! Over the course of the week, our team - led by Steve Dakin, and two dedicated operatives used heavy machinery to clear roughly 130 tonnes of fly-tipped waste and spoil that had piled up for years.
To round off the effort, our team joined forces with Wates Group and Measom Dryline for an afternoon of litter picking to give the space its final polish.

Local resident Simon said: “I want to give thanks to Wates and Howard Civil Engineering. Without them this work would never have been done. Now when we look out of our windows, we see a green space, instead of rubbish.”

Giving back to the communities where we build is at the heart of everything we do. Seeing this area transformed into a clean, safe green space for local children and families to enjoy makes all the hard work worth it.

A huge thank you to Simon, the local residents, Wates Group, Measom Dryline, and our team for their hard work, teamwork, and enthusiasm in transforming this space!

What a fantastic morning at our Recruitment Open Day at Howard House last week!

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the rainy weather to come down to Seacroft and chat with us about building a rewarding career in construction. We had a brilliant turnout, meeting both keen 18-25-year-olds ready to kickstart their traineeships and experienced groundworkers looking for their next move across West and South Yorkshire.

Special thanks to the HCE team on-site today, James Page, Steve Dakin, Tony Kilbane, and Ewan Mason for running the sessions.

We also want to give a massive thank you to Adam Simpson, George Probert, Andy Doc, Micky Joe and Kiel Tetley. They took time out of their busy schedules to share their experiences in construction, how they got there, and what helped them succeed in the industry.

Our team is currently reviewing all the applications and we’ll be reaching out in the coming weeks to extend offers to successful candidates ahead of our 28th September start date.

On a busy construction site, it’s easy to get caught up in the next task, the next deadline and everything that needs doing.

But every now and then, it’s worth taking a step back and looking up.

One of the site team at our Skelton Grange project took a moment to capture this brilliant view recently

A nice reminder that there’s more to a day on site than just getting the job done.
