Here’s a stripped-back lens test from one of our very own Lens Technician Engineer, Cihat, captured while out in Istanbul, near the iconic Galata bridge – A night out in Istanbul!

Shot handheld with a monopod on a Sony A7S III, using the TLS Rehoused Nikon AI 58mm and 135mm at wide-open apertures. Captured entirely in natural light and with no colour grading, this short test offers a true-to-life glimpse of the distinctive character and rendering of these legendary vintage optics.

With smooth, rounded bokeh, natural depth and focus fall-off, controlled flares and excellent low-light performance, the Nikon AI/AI-S lenses deliver a beautifully balanced image with plenty of character — while maintaining the consistency and versatility demanded by modern cinematography.

The complete TLS Nikon AI/AI-S set features 11 focal lengths from 15mm–135mm, with generous coverage for modern full-frame and large-format cameras, while remaining highly capable for Super 35.

The Hidden Impact of Oil Migration.

A clean iris is essential for smooth, reliable lens performance!

These before and after images show the dramatic difference that professional servicing can make. At the top (before image), oil migration has contaminated the iris blades, leaving them with a wet, shiny appearance. At the bottom (after image), following a complete strip-down and precision clean by the TLS servicing team, the iris is restored to its correct condition.

Oil migration might seem like a minor issue at first, but if left untreated it can cause iris blades to stick together, placing unnecessary stress on the mechanism. Over time, this can lead to damaged blades, broken drive pins and costly repairs.

Regular servicing is the best way to prevent oil migration, protect your investment and keep your lenses performing exactly as they should.

What makes a great vintage lens?
Subconsciously bringing an emotional connection to the audience through expressive character, while having the engineering reliability to outperform the longest days on set, time after time. Canon Rangefinders have both.
Some vintage lenses are renowned for their look. Others are known for their erratic maintenance schedule.

TLS Canon Rangefinders are different.

Sitting perfectly between the classic 35mm and 50mm focal lengths, it's the missing piece that completes the set, offering an incredibly natural perspective while matching the signature look of the original Rangefinders. It offers a more natural fit to the Canon Rangefinder set when the 50mm f0.95 ‘Dream Lens’ is a little too extreme.

Congratulations to Alex Disenhof, ASC on his Emmy Nomination!

We're incredibly proud to see Alex Disenhof, ASC nominated for Outstanding Cinematography for a One-Hour Series at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards for his stunning work on Task. A truly deserved recognition for an exceptional cinematographer.

For Task, Alex chose a combination of TLS-rehoused Canon FD and Canon K35 lenses to create the series' distinctive visual language. Speaking about the lenses, Alex described them as having "beautiful softness without sacrificing detail," adding that they "felt incredibly organic" and delivered "a timeless, cinematic quality" that perfectly suited the story.

It's always a privilege to see our rehoused lenses helping talented filmmakers bring their vision to life, and we're honoured they played a small part in such an incredible production.

The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards will take place on 14 September 2026, and we'll be cheering Alex on every step of the way. Best of luck from everyone at TLS!
