🏠 How Can You Tell If a Wall Is Load-Bearing?

Thinking about knocking down a wall to create a more open-plan space? Before any wall is removed, it’s important to establish whether it’s supporting the structure above.

A load-bearing wall can support floor joists, walls on the floor above and, in some cases, the roof. Removing one without the correct structural support could result in cracking, sagging or serious structural damage.

Signs a wall may be load-bearing:
• It runs perpendicular to the floor joists above
• There’s another wall directly above or below it
• It forms part of an external or party wall
• It’s constructed from brick or blockwork
• It’s thicker than around 100mm or sounds solid when knocked
• It lines up with a steel beam in an adjoining room or ceiling

Signs it may be non-load-bearing include running parallel with the joists, being constructed from timber stud and plasterboard, or having no structural elements directly above it.

⚠️ These signs aren’t conclusive. Every property is different, so if you’re planning to remove a wall, it’s always best to have it properly assessed.
