🎉 Volunteers' Week is a time in the year when we can celebrate the great people behind charitable causes.
As the team at Sizewell C grows to deliver the construction of our power station, so does our ambition to support local charities, particularly those based in East Suffolk near our construction site.
We caught up with our volunteering coordinator and Social Value Specialist, Sara Warwick who told us what volunteering means to Sizewell C and the different ways in which our teams get involved.
🌟 Sara, what does the company do to support its workers when they want to volunteer?
💬 At a base level, Sizewell C supports volunteering by giving employees and embedded contractors an annual allowance of 15 hours to help causes in line with our values.
The Senior Leadership Team has also shown real support. It's brilliant that Site Delivery Director Damian Leydon has become sponsor of our Doing the Power of Good for Suffolk Volunteering Scheme.
Damian also chairs the Sizewell C Site Social Benefits Forum which links up our suppliers with larger social value projects in the local community so he was a natural fit for the sponsor role. He’s passionate about Sizewell C supporting our local neighbours and being part of the wider community.
🌟 What kind of causes do SZC workers get involved in?
💬 Almost anything and everything! Our workers are keen to volunteer wherever required. Activities range from marshalling at events to providing IT training. Some of our volunteers enjoy reading with children to improve literacy skills and other people get together to do group gardening. We have especially seen a need for skills-based volunteering and are really keen to support with that where it’s possible.
🌟 Does Sizewell C have many volunteers?
💬 Yes, and I'm pleased to say that the number is growing! We report on our volunteering numbers annually in our Sustainability Report. Last year, we had 99 volunteers who dedicated an incredible 543 hours to good causes. Since April this year, colleagues have completed almost 800 volunteering hours.
🌟 Who do we work with to link our volunteers to good local causes?
💬 Our Social Partner, Community Action Suffolk, manage our volunteering platform for us. They ensure charities and local organisations are aware of our Doing the Power of Good for Suffolk Volunteering Scheme so we can advertise their opportunities to the Sizewell team.
🌟 Finally, what does volunteering mean to you personally, Sara?
💬 It’s so important and beneficial to the communities who need support and to the volunteers - it’s most definitely a two-way thing. To me personally, when I volunteer, it gives me a real sense of purpose. It’s an opportunity to get involved in something different to my daytime role, meet incredible people and do some good – all at the same time!
🎉 We’re marking National Volunteers’ Week by celebrating the outstanding contribution of its workforce, who have given almost 800 hours of volunteering over the past year.
