We invite members of the public to attend our second community engagement event on Tuesday 23rd September 2025, at Mossbank Public Hall, Shetland, ZE2 9RB between 3:30pm and 7:30pm. The event will showcase updated plans for the proposed Neshion Energy Park (NEP), located to the east of the Sullom Voe Oil Terminal and Shetland Gas Plant.

Since the first public engagement event, the project team has made significant changes to the layout - including the removal of two turbines - in direct response to feedback from local residents and findings from environmental studies. These updates are designed to reduce potential impacts on nearby homes and the surrounding environment.

The proposed development includes wind turbines and battery storage. However, NEP is designed to deliver benefits that go beyond renewable energy generation. The project includes a Local Electricity Discount Scheme (LEDS) for nearby households and businesses, opportunities for community ownership and commitments to support local employment, training and initiatives.

“As a local myself, I’ve listened carefully to the community’s views and have been working passionately on the introduction of the LEDS scheme. It’s something I truly believe in, as it will provide meaningful financial support to the people living near the project. We’ve acted on feedback, and these updates reflect our commitment to responsible development that delivers real local benefits in line with the Shetland Fair Share Principles. I encourage everyone to come along, ask questions, and help refine the next stage of the project.” - Lauren Anderson, Project Manager, Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd

“Yesterday, we announced a Memorandum of Understanding with Veri Energy to explore how power generated at NEP could support a new low-carbon fuel plant at the Sullom Voe Terminal. We're excited about the potential for this collaboration to contribute to a more sustainable future for the Terminal, while helping to safeguard the jobs and investment it brings to Shetland.” - Brendan Hall, Development Manager, Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd

This engagement event is a valuable opportunity for residents and stakeholders to learn more about the revised plans, speak directly with the project team, and provide input that will help shape the future of NEP. Everyone is welcome, and refreshments will be available. We’d love to hear your thoughts - come along and be part of the conversation.

We are pleased to report that our planning application to the Shetland Islands Council (SIC) for an extension to our Luggie’s Knowe windfarm has been approved.

The proposed development of a single wind turbine and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) will replace two previously consented wind turbines at Luggie’s Knowe to the north of Lerwick. The project will have a combined total generating capacity of up to 19.9 megawatts (MW). The 5MW turbine alone could produce enough energy to power 180,000 Electric Vehicle miles each day.

The original planning permission was granted in 2012 for the construction and operation of three wind turbines. One of the consented wind turbines was constructed and has been operational since 2015.

We are exploring routing community benefit payments from the development into schemes such as Hjaltland Housing Association’s existing Fuel Vouchers scheme, which will help some people experiencing fuel poverty to pay their energy bills.

Construction work could start in 2026 depending on availability of technology. The build time is estimated to be 9-12 months.

Back with a Bang: Shetland Science Fair Returns to Ignite Curiosity

Shetland Science Fair returns for the first time since 2009. This week, nearly 400 S2 & S3 pupils arrived at the Clickimin Leisure Centre to participate in a range of activities.

Organised by Shetland Aerogenerators staff, in close collaboration with Shetland Schools, the Science Fair included:

8 sessions each day
16 different science activities
8 exhibitors
Classes from all 7 of Shetland’s high and junior high schools
National contributors this year were: Archaeology Scotland, Glasgow Science Centre, Laura Moss Education, and Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh.

Local partners included Shetland Amenity Trust, Shetland Islands Council Climate Change Strategy Team, Skills Development Scotland, and UHI Shetland.

The activities spanned diverse STEM topics including space, archaeology, biodiversity and climate change.

Some comments from pupils and teachers:
“I loved the experiments and having fun with my friends.”
“The workshops were all so different and it made me think a lot about how wide the range of science careers are”
“It was super to see pupils engaged with outside agencies from local and national companies and actively participating in experiments.”

While this year engaged S2 & S3 pupils from across the 7 Shetland High and Junior High Schools, it is hoped that the Science Fair will expand to more age groups in the years to come.

The Shetland Science Fair is supported by the Shetland Aerogenerators Community Benefit Fund following a successful application by Brae High School Parent Council.

Brae High School Parent Council co-chair, Danny Peterson said:
“It’s great to see the Science Fair return and the exciting engagement opportunities this has created for S2 and S3 bairns from across Shetland. We are really pleased to have received this funding and support, and look forward to seeing the Science Fair develop in years to come.”
Shetland Aerogenerators Community Benefit Fund is administered by Shetland Community Benefit Fund. Northlink Ferries provided additional support for travel for the national partners.

Congratulations to the organisers of the Rising North Festival for an incredible weekend of music and fun. Hopefully everyone has recovered their voices.
Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd has been very happy to have supported the inaugural festival and delighted that opportunities for younger bands and audiences were such an integral part of the line-up.
We look forward to next year.
Thank you to Brian Gray for all the photos.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Shetland Islands of Opportunity stand at All-Energy last week.

It was Shetland Aero's first year exhibiting and we had a fantastic time alongside Lerwick Port Authority, Shetland Islands Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Statkraft, Veri Energy, Arven Offshore Wind Farm, Stoura Offshore Wind Farm, Norn Alliance and Peterson.

Shetland Aerogenerators Ltd is delighted to announce that Lauren Anderson, Project Manager, has been shortlisted as a finalist for Scottish Renewables' Young Professionals Green Energy Awards 2024 in the Personal Improvement Award category.

Lauren’s nomination reflects her dedication to professional development since joining Shetland Aero on a Graduate Placement in 2022. Lauren gained PRINCE2 status in 2022 and is currently undertaking work-based learning in the form of the Renewables Academy (RENAC) Certified ‘Renewable Energy Project Developer: Wind Power’ qualification. Lauren is a highly capable, dedicated young woman and an absolute pleasure to work with and it is no surprise to us that she has reached this stage of the Awards process.

A Shetland Aerogenerators delegation will attend the Scottish Renewables’ Young Professionals Green Energy Awards dinner in April and we look forward to celebrating Lauren’s achievements alongside all the other nominees.
