The obvious benefit of prototyping is finding out whether something works.

One of the less obvious benefits is helping uncover what doesn’t work before you’ve gone too far along the production process.

When Honda wanted to showcase its vision for autonomous vehicles, seven concepts were created to represent a journey from Nairobi to Manaus.

Ogle was brought in to turn the designs into highly detailed 1:24 scale models.

The challenge? At that scale, even the smallest details matter.

We used SLA to achieve the required accuracy and surface finish, while our modelmakers hand-formed details that couldn’t be produced through 3D printing alone.

Even the paint had to be factored into the design, with clearances built in to ensure everything still fitted together perfectly once finished.

This project was a great example of where technology and traditional modelmaking work best together.

It’s easy to think of painting as the final step of the process.

But when tolerances are tight, paint and finishing need to be considered much earlier in the process and not as a final box to tick.

A few coats can change dimensions, affect how components fit together and alter the final appearance of a part.

That’s why finishing isn’t simply about making a prototype look good. It’s a key part of making sure the finished product works as it should.

At Ogle, we can take a part from the initial manufacturing process through finishing and assembly, keeping those considerations in the same conversation from start to finish.

We love SLA here at Ogle but we understand that it isn’t the answer to every prototyping challenge we come across.

But when accuracy, fine detail and surface finish matter, it’s hard to look beyond SLA.

The process is particularly useful for aesthetic models, fit-and-form prototypes and master patterns for vacuum casting.

And the process doesn’t have to stop when the part comes off the printer.

At Ogle, SLA parts can be hand finished, painted, assembled and fitted with inserts to create highly finished, production-like models.

What does your prototype answer?

A prototype doesn’t necessarily need to look exactly like the finished product.

If you’re testing fit, accuracy may be the priority.

If you’re testing function, strength and material properties might matter more.

If you’re presenting the product to investors or customers, appearance could be the most important thing.

A prototype should be designed and built around the question you’re trying to answer.

That’s why there isn’t one single best prototyping process.

We’ve been making models and prototypes since 1954.

The industry has changed considerably during that time and standing still has never been an option.

Over the years, we’ve continually invested in people as well as new technologies and equipment, from traditional modelmaking talent through to industrial SLA and SLS, CNC machining and advanced finishing departments.

Our latest CNC machine is another example of that approach.

New machinery doesn’t simply mean having another machine here at Ogle HQ. It means greater capacity, more capability, more flexibility and more options for our customers.

Technology will continue to change. Our job is to make sure we’re changing with it while still holding the experience and craftsmanship that have always been at the heart of what we do.
