The "Back to Office" tug-of-war: Are we choosing between flexibility and control?
At HFX, we’ve been speaking with so many HR teams lately who are feeling caught in the middle of the "return to office" debate. It’s a tough spot to be in. How do you rebuild that in-person culture without making it feel like you’re pulling back on the flexibility everyone has gotten used to?
It feels like we’re stuck in a bit of a binary choice right now: either you’re back at the desk, or you’re fully flexible. But honestly, we think that misses the point. The real challenge isn’t where people are sitting; it’s about how we build enough trust and connection so that where they work matters less than how they’re supported.
When mandates feel like a way to control people, engagement takes a hit. But when flexibility doesn't come with clear expectations, teams can feel a bit lost.
We are really curious to hear what you’re seeing in your own teams:
• How are you actually finding that balance between getting people back together and respecting their autonomy?
• Are you worried that focusing on "office days" is distracting us from the real work of helping managers lead by outcomes rather than clock-watching?
At HFX, we’re obviously big on using data to get clarity, but we’ve always believed that the right tools should be there to take the pressure off managers, not to keep them hovering over their teams.
Would love to hear your take. Has your team found a "sweet spot," or is this still a work in progress for you?
