Congratulations to George Hopper, winner of the BMP Recording Prize 2026. Our annual prize is awarded for the best location recording by a 2nd-year student on the renowned 'Tonmeister' degree course at the University of Surrey.

George recorded Haydn's Symphony No. 42 in D in a live concert by the Erato Orchestra at St Mark's Church, Purley in Surrey, conducted by Russell Keable.

BMP's Ken Blair presented George with his prize at a year-end event on the University of Surrey campus on 2nd June.

George achieved his excellent result using a minimalist technique comprising, a main spaced-pair of Schoeps MK2H omni-directional mics, a single MK2H double bass spot mic, and an AKG C460B woodwind spot mic.

Earlier this week we spent three days recording contemporary folk-Nordic duo, Aespeniða, in the superb acoustics of 19th century Gilfillan Memorial Church, Dundee. Six brand new compositions by Miriam Iorwerth on marimba and percussion, and Barry Nisbet on fiddle, guitar and vocals.

We are much saddened by the news of the death of trumpeter, composer and educator, John Wallace. We first worked with John in the '90s, making a film about brass playing. Even in the few short examples, played to highlight points in his talk, the sound he produced and the musicality of the playing stopped the crew in its tracks, it was so unbelievably beautiful. More recently we joined John and pianist, Simon Wright, in the studio of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (where John was Principal at the time), to record an album of new works for Trumpet and Piano, for ABRSM's Spectrum Series. We treasure this wonderful photo taken by Ken Dundas as it so brilliantly conveys the relaxed, fun atmosphere with which John and Simon imbued the sessions.
John, the finest of musicians, humble man, always generously sharing his knowledge, rest in peace.

The ability to distinguish clearly between the musical performance in a recording and that of the recorded sound, is something which recording engineers and producers exercise on a regular basis. With the use of recording equipment now widespread in the classroom, Music Teacher Magazine asked BMP Recording Engineer, Ken Blair, to write a 'how to' article for teachers to explain how it's done.

We were on location in the Shetland Islands this week recording the 'Hildina Ballad', the largest surviving example of poetry or song in the 'Shetland Norn' language.

Five groups of local singers each recorded 7 of the 35 verses and choruses, directed by musician, Barry Nisbet, who has reconstructed the ballad and also performed as 'Skipper' - the song leader.

Thanks to everyone at Shetland Arts for the warm welcome, especially Tim Matthew for such excellent tech support.

Super-smooth recording sessions, probably one of the best sea views ever from our sound control room, and the added bonus of an after work session of a different sort at The Lounge Bar in Mounthooly Street with musicians from Chicago, Buenos Aires, New York City and Shetland.

Working in a range of beautiful acoustics and buildings in Scotland and London over the summer reminded us that the sound of our recordings is not just that of musicians and microphones at the sessions, but also the work of skilled architects and stonemasons, long departed.
