Happy Halloween: The disappearance of Ben Padilla & the Angola B727 👻

On May 25th 2003, a 28 year old Boeing 727-200 [N844AA], formally of American Airlines, took off without warning from Luanda, Angola with no lights, no communication and no flight plan filed.

With the ATC tower desperately trying to radio the ‘ghost plane’, the aircraft departed out to the southwest over the Atlantic Ocean before disappearing out of sight.

The aircraft was never seen again and no debris from the aircraft has been found on land or sea, even following a CIA and FBI international search!

It is thought prior to take off that two men boarded the aircraft. One of them was American pilot and flight engineer Ben C. Padilla. The other, John Mutantu, was a hired mechanic.

When a major European airline recently tasked us with assisting a time-critical AOG recovery, we quickly identified the Antonov AN12 as the perfect fit for the replacement component ✈

The aircraft was loaded with the awkward shaped unit in Central Europe and made its way to Liverpool John Lennon Airport where it was taken to the stranded AOG aircraft. The aircraft shortly returned to service allowing our customer to maximise fleet efficiency 🤝

In February 2022, we chartered the truly unique and unsurpassable Antonov AN225 of ANTONOV Company to transport urgent medical supplies from China to Denmark. Unknowingly to us at the time of this momentous occasion, the operation was to be the last ever cargo flight this iconic aircraft would ever complete.

Thank you to ANTONOV Airlines for working tirelessly to make the final flight possible and for showing such incredible resilience in the face of adversity throughout 2022.

LAST EVER Antonov AN225 Cargo Flight – Chartered by 26Aviation

In February 2022, we chartered the truly unique and unsurpassable Antonov AN225 Mriya to transport urgent medical supplies from China to Denmark. Unknowingly to us at the time of this momentous occasion, the operation was to be the last ever cargo flight this iconic aircraft would ever complete.

The 26AVIATION team travelled to Denmark to capture footage of the illustrious aircraft in all its glory, where it was fittingly transporting life-saving medical cargo.

Whilst we were overwhelmingly privileged to join the exclusive list of charter specialists that have successfully completed a mission with the AN225, the aircraft then ferried to Gostomel in Ukraine, and we soon joined the global aviation community in mourning the end of a pioneering era for heavy lift aircraft operations.

We would like to thank our great partners from Antonov Airlines for working tirelessly to make the final flight possible and for showing such incredible resilience in the face of adversity throughout 2022, as well as ANTONOV Company for having the vision and ambition for turning Mriya from a dream into a reality that astonished the world during its 34 years of service.
