We are looking forward to presenting a keynote on Friday, October 18, at Usquare ULB/VUB in Brussels. Co-founder Steyaert will explore the intersection of Art and Science, sharing insights from his doctoral research and experiences with the SEADS collective, including the myths and lessons learned along the way. The talk will also discuss Ēngines of Ēternity, our ongoing project currently aboard the International Space Station, which we’ll be showcasing at the venue.

bioSignals is open! Thanks so much to everyone who came to the opening - we’ll share more photos of the exhibition at large soon for those who couldn’t make it.

Yesterday evening Dr. Amy Holt hosted her Creative Moss workshop in the space. She discussed ecology, foraging & growing, and various uses of moss, and then worked with participants to combine a concoction of honey, vinegar and cornflour with moss to create crafts with the potential to expand and develop in future, as the moss itself grows.

We are excited to announce the completion earlier this week of Biomodd [TTO15], a collaborative effort by members of SEADS and other innovators, designers, scientists, and artists!
Biomodd [TTO15] was new iteration of the Biomodd series, realized at the MUSE - Museo delle Scienze in Trento, Italy, as a four-day workshop. The workshop was part of the Asia-Europe Foundation - ASEF Cultural Festival and the Oriente Occidente Dance Festival. The installation’s design was inspired by the concept of cultural exchange, with its form reflecting the intersection of different traditions and ideas.

Biomodd [TTO15] continued the series’ exploration of symbiosis between nature, technology, and humanity. It featured the integration of computer systems that channel excess heat to support the growth of plants and algae within the artwork, a hallmark of previous Biomodd projects. This iteration of Biomodd stands as our first in Italy, adding to the nearly 40 versions built by SEADS in various parts of the world with local communities.

Biomodd is a collaborative community-engaged art project that has been running since 2007, with over two dozen iterations. The project is seeking new relationships between nature and technology across different cultures around the world, thanks to the creation of hybrid interactive art installations developed on site with local communities.

Tomorrow, we'll be sending off our Ēngines of Ēternity art project to the ISS for the third time! Ēngines of Ēternity is an evolving artwork co-created by rotifers, humans, algorithms, and outer space. Each time it returns, we use the data on the rotifers' response to their stay in space to further evolve the work algorithmically.

Initiated in 2019, Ēngines of Ēternity is a collaboration with Prof. Karine Van Doninck's lab at the ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles. The project has been exhibited in Brussels, London, Dresden, Copenhagen, and at ESA - European Space Agency. Special thanks to Boris Hespeels and his team at the Université de Namur for their ongoing support!

It begins!! SEADS members from around the world are making their way to Aachen to chair tracks, give talks, and absorb exciting ideas at Politics of the Machine conference! We’re really excited about it for a bunch of reasons, but one is that some of us have been working together for years without ever meeting face to face. We can’t wait to get together and share ideas between us and with all of the other wonderful conference goers! We’ll also be sharing updates here over the next couple days for anyone who can’t make it to Aachen.
