Home studio build - Part 4

Acoustic panels

A lot of measuring, remeasuring, checking and drilling went into hanging the rest of the panels. 1 of the walls is concrete (tough) but the other 3 are thin plaster board (I could literally make the holes with my hands). I had some advice from for the placement. We went with 2 sides, 2 on the back wall and 2 on the ceiling.
Obviously the ceiling was challenging but MarMar came to the rescue and we figured it out. We should have made a time lapse. Drilling into a concrete ceiling isn’t fun!
I’m so happy with how this has all come together and they look great and most importantly the room sounds great. Still a bit of a mess in there at this point but there’s more to come.

Home studio build - Part 3

Acoustic panels
The interior for the broadband panels is recycled cotton insulation (very blue, includes the occasional clothing label if you look closely). The fabric is Camira Cara from who were also a great help with the whole process from the start. I think I got about 10 fabric colour test patches before settling on ‘Austen’. And Austen we don’t have a problem, cause I’m really happy with the colour! Getting the panels inside and the fabric stapled on was super satisfying. There’s some eye hooks on the back with picture wire. Next step was measuring up to hang them on the walls. First one was a challenge (the only one into solid concrete) but so amazing to see one finally finished and in place.

Once again thanks to everyone for their help with this project. The tutorial from Michael Wynne is really the place to start. Any questions or help I can offer to anyone thinking of building some of their own panels, get in touch!

Home studio build - Part 2

Acoustic panel frames
I spent a few months last year building the acoustic panels for the studio. After a LOT of research, advice, help, and work they’ve turned out really well. Probably the biggest ‘DIY’ project I’ve ever done and I thoroughly enjoyed making them.
I’m going to break this into a few posts cause it was quite a journey…
The wood was carefully sourced in Brittany, expertly chosen and cut by my dad and then transported across the country by train (It seemed like a good idea at the time). Reassembled the frames at the studio, glued and stapled the sides, reinforced the corners with tape and then stapled in the backing (garden fabric).

Huge thanks to everyone for their help and guidance and advice and answering my constant questions. Couldn’t have done it without vs Airaphon MarMar + Laeti’s mum for the regular trips to Leroy Merlin!
(and of course that amazing YouTube tutorial by Michael Wynne)

I didn't know this video existed online until someone added me on LinkedIn and said that's how they'd found me!

Being a sound trainee on big productions like Downton Abbey (back in 2015!) was a huge step for me and started me on my career in professional sound production (and post production where I am now!)

These roles are so important to teach the skills and knowledge that people need when entering our industry and ScreenSkills is a brilliant charity and resource helping provide access to jobs that might otherwise seem out of reach and impossible to get started in.
