UK Polar Network

UK Polar Network The UK Polar Network organises skill development workshops, networking days and mentor panels for early career polar research scientists.

The UK Polar Network was established in April 2007 as part of the 2007 – 2009 International Polar Year (IPY). We are the UK branch of the Association of Early Career Scientists (APECS) and currently have over 500 members, from aspiring undergraduates to Masters and PhD students, postdoctoral researchers, and recent faculty appointees. As a voluntary group we organise career development events for

early career scientists in addition to running education and outreach activities to enthuse and inspire young people about the polar regions.

At Glasgow Science Festival Glasgow Science Festival we also spoke about the implications microplastics have on the Polar regions!

In recent years, substantial amounts of plastics have been introduced into the environment, and as a result have entered marine ecosystems.

Microplastics which are defined as tiny plastic particles less than 5mm have now become a global concern.

Consequently, microplastics have been documented in vast and remote areas like the Southern Ocean / Antarctica.

Despite Antarctica being a remote and pristine environment. Antarctica is not immune to anthropogenic environmental provisions like microplastics, and have been documented in multiple environmental zones, including ice, deep - sea sediments, surface waters, snow and biota. Due to their positive buoyancy and their small size, microplastics are potentially more available for ingestion by tiny organisms such as zooplankton, further posing significant threats to polar ecosystems.

Glasgow Science Festival 2026!

This year, we were very excited to participate in the 2026 Science Festival in Glasgow, sharing cool facts about polar adaptations, and the unique challenges that polar marine mammals and organisms face to survive.

Through interactive activities and conversations, we engaged visitors of all ages and inspired curiosity about polar science!

⏱️Join us for the next UKPN seminar, delivered by Imogen Wadlow from the University of Leeds, on Wednesday 29th April at 2-3pm BST.

❄️Drawing on experiences from polar fieldwork and mountain leadership, this talk explores how positive decision-making keeps teams safe and supported in challenging environments. It highlights key positive practises to guide decisions made in the field, flags heuristic traps and presents simple tools to guardrail against these pitfalls. While rooted in fieldwork, many of these lessons are broadly applicable to anyone working in team environments, including computer-based researchers & modellers.

💻The event will be held on Google Meet and is open to anyone interested. Meeting details will be sent out on registration. Registration and more details are available on Eventbrite here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/decision-making-for-safe-and-supportive-teams-tickets-1987488942930

Dear UKPN members,

The UKPN is looking for speakers to contribute to our upcoming seminar series for 2026-27. We are inviting you to fill out the Google Form below as an expression of interest.

https://forms.gle/odADAPdqHFBLY3CTA

A seminar talk is generally one hour long, and delivered virtually. Talks can be on any topic relevant to the polar science community, and interdisciplinary subjects are particularly welcome. For inspiration, our YouTube channel has recordings of some previous talks: https://www.youtube.com/.

Any talks which align with previous training topics would be well received - for example: peer-review, leadership, stakeholder engagement, co-design with indigenous communities, grant proposal writing, science leadership, engaging with policy makers, research data management, outreach... The list goes on! We would definitely encourage you to be creative about what you can offer to ECRs - if you aren’t sure whether something would be suitable, please do ask and we can discuss it together.

If you have any further questions, please email [email protected] and we will be happy to provide more information.
