Something we're noticing more and more on our gas safety visits: CO alarms that are out of date, undated, not working or missing altogether.
It's just one of those things that quietly slips under the radar. A CO alarm gets fitted, the years pass, and nobody quite remembers when it went in or when it needs replacing.
Carbon monoxide is invisible and odourless, and the only thing standing between you or your tenants and a potential exposure is a working alarm. Most CO alarms have a lifespan of 7 years - after that, they may look fine but no longer detect reliably.
Under the Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (Amendment) Regulations 2022, a working CO alarm is a legal requirement in any room containing a gas appliance. A quick check today could save you a headache - and more importantly, keep you or your tenants safe.
Our tip: write the installation date on the alarm with a permanent marker when you fit it. Simple, free, and means you'll always know where you stand.
If you're not sure about the status of your CO alarm, we're always happy to advise on our next visit.
