In our last post we said big things are happening, well here are a few pictures to show the Big Thing, it's a Colchester Tornado 200 Lathe, this boosts the turning capacity at Luddite engineering to over 250mm diameter and 400mm in length. We now have the workshop almost organised again and the machines all ready to work. We also have for sale our previous lathe, a Tornado 80 with a lot of tooling so if that is of interest please drop us a message.

The end of January at the Luddite workshop and we have these nice parts to show. These are all going towards the Restoration of Standard 4 Tank 80150, a project that's had parts from us before. We get a huge amount of satisfaction from doing restoration/overhaul parts and these are somewhat rare in that they will be visible to anyone and everyone that sees the Locomotive when it is complete.

So for the last time in 2025 here are some of the interesting bits to have left the Luddite workshop in the last month or so. I'll put some info with the pictures. That just leaves me to wish you all the very best for 2026.

A little job from our 3D printer for myself mostly but I can produce these if required. I bought my Land Rover some Light Guards, and the first time I opened the back doors I managed to break one with the spare wheel. This happened because the back of the guard doesn't meet the vehicle aiming any impact force get taken by the 2 little mounting tags.... Slight redesign later and we have a guard that I can hit with the spare wheel. These are Printed in ASA so very resistant to UV etc.

They would be £35 for 4. £65 for 8 including Postage and VAT.

Another busy week in the workshop, last job completed this week is this small batch of studs, ⅝ and ½ Whitworth threads and a few different lengths. They will be used as part of the restoration efforts on BR Standard 4 Tank Engine 80150 (a loco we have done parts for before). Watch this space because next week we have a couple of very nice parts to make for 80150.

As well as the VMC featured in the last post, Luddite Engineering Ltd recently invested in a 3D printer. The printer has many potential uses and it can print a wide range of filament over a large working envelope, approximately 350mm x 350mm x 350mm. Here we can see a prototype seal plate printed for a local Turbo Builder to try and combine some old with some new bits. The first print highlighting 1 small oversight. We can now tweak our 3D model, reprint and test fit the mark 2 seal plate a lot quicker and cheaper than it would be to manufacture a 1 off on the CNC Machine Tools.

A job we repaired with the help of Twisted Steel Worx. I've had some sketchy things set up in the lathe over my time, but this was probably top of the list.

Its been well over a year since the last post on here, just because it's been quiet it doesn't mean the workshop has not been busy. Last year Luddite Engineering invested in a machining center giving a significant improvement to our milling capability. The machine has been very busy since arriving with us but doing a lot of work we are unable to share. That's now changed so we can show the machine busy making a batch of spacers for one of our own products.
