Polyurethane as a material works hard… it keeps performing in environments where other materials can wear, crack or fail far sooner.

But getting that performance means choosing the right polyurethane for the job and that takes experience. Hardness, flexibility, load and working conditions all matter, which is why there’s rarely a one size fits all answer.

At Watts, we manufacture polyurethane components around the demands of the application, because the right material choice can make a serious difference to performance and service life.

Talk to us about what you need it to do and we will make sure it does it.

These particular bees are manufactured here at Watts as part of a polyurethane bollard.

Seen close up, you can really appreciate the amount of detail involved. The intricate shape is produced in polyurethane before each bee is carefully hand painted to bring that detail to life.

It’s a very different application for polyurethane and a lovely example of just how much detail can be achieved with the material.

How does a polyurethane component go from a drawing to a finished part?

For many of the components we manufacture, it starts with a customer drawing, a sample part or simply a problem that needs solving.

From there, there’s quite a bit that happens before the finished component is ready to leave our factory. Material selection, tooling, manufacturing and inspection all play their part, particularly when the component needs to perform consistently in a demanding application.

We’ve taken a closer look at the process in our latest article, from those initial dimensions and requirements through to the finished polyurethane part.

From food production and mining to printing, automotive, offshore and manufacturing.

They’re very different environments, but all of them rely on polyurethane components at work.

That’s one of the things we love about what we do because you never quite know where the next part we manufacture will end up.

A squeegee blade doesn't have to be completely worn out before it starts affecting performance becasue wear usually happens gradually. The things you may notice at that the edge becomes uneven or the blade no longer sits against the surface as evenly. To all intents and purposes, the squeegee may still be usable, but it isn't necessarily working as efficiently as it was.

These are all signs that it's worth taking a closer look and replacing it. Doing this before it reaches the end of its service life can help maintain a more consistent finish and avoid unnecessary disruption to production.

Like many wear components, it's often the gradual changes that are easiest to overlook. We’re all ready for your order whenever you need us.

Not every replacement component has to be an exact copy of the one it's replacing.

When an existing part reaches the end of its working life, it's often worth reviewing the application before manufacturing a replacement. In some cases, an identical component is exactly what's needed. In others, a different polyurethane grade or a small design adjustment may be more suitable for the way it's being used.

Every application is different, which is why it's always worth looking at the whole picture rather than just the component itself.
