Thorne was founded on a simple observation Eliot made early in his career: there was often a disconnect between the design office and the shop floor.

Yards weren't always getting the level of detail they needed to move efficiently into production, creating additional work before the build could progress.

Thorne set out to change that.

Design for production has been part of our approach ever since. Our naval architects and engineers consider buildability from the outset, developing detailed, production-ready information in close collaboration with the yards bringing it to life.

Good engineering needs to work just as well on the shop floor as it does on screen.

A particularly rewarding moment for the Thorne team at Monaco Yacht Show was being invited to explore the 111m Leviathan, Oceanco.

Thorne supported Tenderworks on the development of the tender programme, contributing heavily to the design and engineering as the tenders progressed from concept to build. A great project to have played a part in, alongside an exceptional wider project team.

Overall, Monaco once again gave the team the chance to catch up with clients, collaborators, and friends from across the industry. Thank you to Southern Spars for their drinks reception and hospitality, along with everyone who made time to meet with the team during another busy show.

Electric propulsion is shifting the design approach for boats, but efficiency begins with the yacht itself, not just the motor or battery.

There isn't a one-size-fits-all when it comes to hull shapes for electric boats. Factors such as hull form, displacement, operating speed, weight, propulsion, and energy storage all play a role in determining how much energy a boat needs to perform effectively.

For the ESEA F800, which was designed as an electric boat from the beginning, we used multiple computational fluid dynamics (CFD) iterations to optimise the hull according to its intended operating profile.

This process balanced resistance, stability, usable space, and performance. This example illustrates why electric boat design should be approached as a comprehensive vessel challenge from the earliest stages.

Taking shape in the Netherlands: the HOLLD yachts 76.

The first all-carbon catamaran to be built in the Netherlands is progressing at HOLLD Yachts, with the carbon structure complete, the deckhouse joined to the hull, and the first stages of primer and paint underway.

For Thorne Design, it’s particularly rewarding to see a project move from detailed engineering into a very real yacht.

Working alongside HOLLD and the wider design and build team, our role has included the naval architecture and technical development needed to translate design intent into a production-ready package, with lightweight composite engineering, systems integration, and weight control considered throughout.

As the build progresses, the lines and proportions we’ve spent so long working with digitally are now becoming unmistakably HOLLD 76.

Small decisions early. Big problems avoided later.

On a large yacht project, nothing happens in isolation. Structure, systems, interiors, weight and design intent are all connected. A decision in one area can quickly create challenges somewhere else.

That’s why early technical input matters.

Bringing naval architecture and structural engineering expertise into the programme early means potential conflicts can be identified while there is still time and flexibility to solve them.

It allows technical solutions to work with the owner’s vision, rather than forcing compromises later.

This becomes particularly important on complex refit and rebuild programmes, where the existing yacht brings another layer of structural and technical constraints.

Working alongside designers, yards, project managers and captains, an independent technical team can interrogate those challenges early and help keep the wider programme moving in the right direction.
