Thorne Yacht Design will be exhibiting Seawork from 9–11 June on stand SB52.

There are some increasingly relevant conversations happening across the show, particularly around lightweight structures, hull efficiency, hybrid systems and electric propulsion.

With the introduction of the new superyacht area, alongside a strong presence from propulsion and technology brands, Seawork feels like an important meeting point between commercial marine engineering and the wider yacht sector.

Our work focuses on translating complex operational requirements into practical, buildable marine solutions by combining naval architecture, structural engineering, and production-ready design.

The HOLLD 72 MYC is a 22m carbon-built power catamaran designed for efficiency, control and offshore capability.

Thorne Designs led the design, structural engineering and naval architecture for the model, providing a fully integrated technical approach from concept through to development.

Lightweight composite construction supports range and performance, while the hull geometry and beam deliver stability and predictable handling over longer passages.

Built to ISO Category A, the focus is on a platform that performs safely and consistently at sea, where structure, weight and design are carefully aligned.

Introducing Ed Salter, our new intern at Thorne Yacht Design.

Ed recently graduated from the University of the West of England with a degree in mechanical engineering. As a passionate sailor, he has a strong interest in marine engineering.

During his six-month internship, Ed will be mentored by Will, a Design Engineer and Naval Architect at Thorne, gaining hands-on experience with live projects - such as the M90 - in both the Hythe yard and the Lymington design office.

In the past, we have recognised the significant value of bringing interns onto our team, and we are always excited to support the next generation in the marine industry.

Thorne Design had a fantastic few days at the International Multihull Show. It’s always a pleasure to return to an environment that reflects a core aspect of our work and background.

It’s fascinating to see how the industry continues to evolve, not only in terms of performance and long-range cruising concepts but also with the increasing shift towards electric and hybrid propulsion, enhanced energy management, and continued advancements in lightweight composite construction.

Moreover, there is a noticeable trend towards balancing performance with onboard volume and usability, particularly in both sailing and powercat platforms.

The show provides a valuable opportunity to take a step back from our projects and engage in meaningful conversations with builders and partners across the sector.

Thank you to ACCWing for taking us out on the water and to everyone who took the time to stop by and speak with us.

Some of the most interesting design challenges come from the parts people rarely notice.

On the HOLLD 74, we worked with HOLLD Yachts and Dijksman Design to develop a carbon composite davit system. Typically treated as purely functional, it became an opportunity to align engineering with the overall design. Read more here.
