Burnout rarely happens overnight.🚦

Small workload check-ins can help managers spot pressure early, before stress starts affecting performance, engagement, or attendance.

A simple traffic light system keeps it clear.

🟢 Green means workload feels manageable
🟠 Amber means pressure is building
🔴 Red means action is needed

It opens the door to better conversations, helps teams feel heard, and gives managers a clearer picture of where support may be needed most.

Simple changes like this can make a real difference to wellbeing across the workplace.

Hiring apprentices and graduates is one thing. Building an early careers programme that actually works long term is another. 🎓

Without the right structure, businesses can end up with inconsistent experiences, stretched managers, and retention challenges that are difficult to fix later on.

The strongest early career programmes are built around future skills needs, clear development pathways, and proper support from day one.

Our latest blog explores how employers can create apprenticeship and graduate programmes that support growth, improve retention, and strengthen long-term talent pipelines.

We’re now a month into the new SSP rules and some businesses are already noticing the impact. 👈

With sick pay payable from day one and eligibility widened, short-term absence now carries an immediate cost. What previously had a small buffer now affects the business from the very first day, which means absence levels that once felt manageable can quickly become more visible on the bottom line.

This isn’t simply about payroll, it’s about how absence is handled across the organisation.

If managers are unsure how to approach sickness conversations, if patterns aren’t being identified early, or if absence isn’t being tracked consistently, costs can quietly rise while productivity and morale begin to dip. 📉

The SSP changes have made weak or inconsistent processes harder to ignore.

If the new rules have highlighted gaps in how absence is managed in your business, we can help you put the right structure in place.

We’re already well into 2026… and many businesses are still using employment contracts written years ago. ⏪

On paper, everything looks fine. But when a dispute lands on your desk, that’s when the gaps show.

It’s rarely an issue until it suddenly is.

Employment contracts are protection. They set expectations from day one and quietly reduce risk in the background. When they’re vague or outdated, that risk sits with you.

As teams grow and working practices evolve, old templates become exposed.

We’ve outlined what every small business should be including in their employment contracts in 2026, from statutory essentials to the clauses that protect you as you grow.

Day-one sick pay has changed the stakes. ⚖️

Short-term absence now carries an immediate cost for SMEs, and weak processes are harder to ignore.

If you have not reviewed your approach recently, now is the time.

Here are 3 questions you should be asking about your absence management right now. ⬇️

Time off should never be a headache. ⏰

Confusion over leave requests can frustrate your team and slow your business down. A clear, simple process showing who to ask, how long approvals take, and what happens next builds trust, reduces errors, and keeps everyone on the same page.

When your people understand the process, they feel respected, more in control, and confident that their requests will be handled fairly.

A straightforward approach to holidays and leave is a small effort with a big impact on morale and workplace culture.

Most payroll problems start with growth. 💢

When your business is small, payroll feels manageable. A few employees, fixed salaries and a simple monthly process that quietly gets done. But as your team expands, so does the complexity.

Overtime, bonuses, sick pay, parental leave, pension auto-enrolment and HMRC reporting all add layers of responsibility. What once took very little time can quickly become a detailed, compliance-driven process where even small errors carry consequences.

Keeping payroll in-house can seem cost-effective, but the hidden costs often show up in leadership time, reliance on one individual and the pressure of keeping up with changing legislation.

If payroll is starting to feel heavier than it used to, it may be time to review how it’s managed.

Employment law has changed again… are you up to speed, or playing catch-up? 👀

Most businesses we speak to aren’t fully clear on what the Employment Rights Act 2025 actually means in practice.

We’re breaking it down properly at the next Preston Grasshoppers RFC Business Network event.

Thursday 14th May | 8:30am 📅

Our Senior HR Consultant, Rhianna Weedon, will cover ERA 2025 and why she has seen an increase in clients needing ERA-related support.

Helen Russell Chartered FCIPD, lead HR consultant and solicitor at Harrison Drury Solicitors, will then explain when and why lawyers get involved in employee disputes and offer an overview of the tribunal process.

John Pennick from Brown & Brown will provide a short introduction to Management Liability insurance – how to protect against the legal liabilities involved with running a business or organisation.

It’s a practical session built for business owners and leaders who want to stay compliant without the headache.

Doors open at 8:30am, with a 9:00am start.

Coffee, bacon buns, and a chance to catch up with other local businesses included. 👈
