FP Technologies Limited has appointed UK Marine Services Ltd (UKMS) as the sole independent surveyor for every HDPE narrowboat hull and shell it builds. From now on, no hull will leave the factory without being independently checked and signed off.

For customers, it changes what they can expect when they buy. Every hull is inspected by an impartial, professionally qualified surveyor with no stake in the sale — so the assurance of quality comes from an independent expert, not from the builder alone. Buyers receive documented, third-party confirmation that the vessel they are purchasing has been built to standard.

For the wider industry, it sets a marker. Independent sign-off on every hull — not occasional spot checks — is rare in volume boatbuilding, and the two companies hope it becomes the expectation rather than the exception across the HDPE sector.

A whirlwind few weeks at UK Marine Services — the team has been spread from the Thames to the Tees, and just about everywhere in between.
Recent works have included:
⚓ Arranging towage of a Dutch Barge from Penton Hook to Hoo
🔧 Ongoing works on a Jemar 25 workboat at Allington
🛠 Insurance repairs to a motor cruiser at Strood
⚙️ Preparing former PLA vessel St Katherine for drydocking at Greenwich
🐾 Inspections of the RSPCA rescue fleet at Middlesbrough — a mix of polyethylene hulls and inflatable Hypalon craft
🔩 Engine works on a motor vessel at Eastbourne

The River Festival is a free event run by volunteers funded by local businesses with activities on the river and around Maidstone

A busy and varied week, starting in Ipswich with a tonnage measurement for UK registration.

From there, we’ve been on the road with the RSPCA, inspecting part of a much larger fleet—twelve rescue boats, along with their engines and trailers, across Shropshire, Birmingham and Bolton. That programme is ongoing and will continue over the coming weeks.

We also carried out a heel test on a day hire boat in Bradford on Avon, assessing stability under controlled loading—an important check for safe operation in the hire sector.

Back on the water, we completed the tow of a houseboat pod to Allington Marina, and finished the week with engine repairs on a survey vessel in Gillingham, getting it back up and running.

A good example of the range of work we cover week to week—surveys, inspections, stability testing, towage and engineering.
