At CADATHON 2026, we’ll be exploring real-world scenarios through design.

Teams will select one of the following case studies to link their design to. A full and detailed design brief will be released on the competition day.

Case Study 01 — Green Space.
Looking beyond what’s there, and thinking about how it’s actually used.

Case Study 02 — University Campus.
A typical day, rethought through how people move, stay, and interact.

Case Study 03 — Football Stadium.
Designing for everything around the game, not just the pitch.

Great design considers the whole experience. Design for people. Not just spaces.

We’re excited to share more details about this year’s CADathon brief, for the event taking place on Tuesday 21st April at the University of Manchester Makerspace (Nancy Rothwell Building).

🔧 The 2026 Challenge
Design a product or engineering solution that reduces environmental impact, enhances biodiversity, or improves social mobility within an urban space — encouraging the public to interact more sustainably with their environment.

Taking inspiration from UN Sustainable Development Goal 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, this year’s brief focuses on developing solutions for one of the following community spaces:

• Outdoor green space
• University campus
• Indoor public venue

Taking inspiration from the case studies and designing their solution for their chosen community space, teams will select one of these spaces and develop their solution using a CAD software of their choosing, before presenting their ideas to our judging panel.

‼️ 1 week to go to submit your SOFE application for the 2026 Manchester Heat 📝

Why should you apply? We spoke to last year's SOFE heat winner Finn Symonds, who shares his key takeaways from the UK final, and his advice to all applicants.

What did you learn and take away from the final?

After winning the regional competition in Manchester, I had the opportunity to compete in the national final in Newcastle. While I didn’t win, the experience was incredibly rewarding. I presented alongside some real talents from across the country which opened my eyes and pushed me to grow in speaking skills and confidence in communication. There are no wrong topics in SOFE and you will see a great range of inspiring ideas being shared. My biggest takeaway was simply to enjoy the experience. Make the most of every opportunity you get because competitions like this while nice to win, are more about throwing yourself out there and gaining experience that will shape both you and your professional future.

My presentation was titled ‘Renewable Energy: Wind Turbines - Is it really worth it?’. For my presentation I spoke about wind turbines and explored their benefits and shortcomings before looking at how their performance can be improved using computational methods such as CFD to optimise blade design and wind farm configurations.

Make sure to download the application form via the weblink and grab a contestant or audience ticket. The deadline for applications is midnight on the 9th of March.
