Chorlton's Big Green Festival 2012 -Saturday March 31st @ St Clement's Church

Chorlton's Big Green Festival is an annual celebration of sustainable living in Manchester which offers a vibrant mix of live music and performance, hands-on practical workshops, food and drink, arts and swaps, and much more. Chorlton’s Big Green Festival launched in April 2009 with an estimated 4,000 people joining in

the green festivities. Each year the festival activities are based on a different theme and 2012 is no exception to the rule. Following 2011 ‘Bike to the Future’ theme, which saw over 50 local residents take to the streets for the green bike parade, the team at Green Chorlton have this year chosen ‘The World In Chorlton’ with a view to expand the festivals reach to other community and cultural groups.‘The World In Chorlton’ represents the celebration of all things local and cultural and promises a varied range of fantastic entertainment and activities for the whole family. Chorlton's Big Green Festival 2011 - review

Green Chorlton would like to thank everyone involved in Chorlton's Big Green Festival 2011 – the organisers, volunteers and everyone who came. It was a fantastic day and lead-up events such as the fringe film night and the What Next? Forum proved to be a great way for people to talk about the ideas behind our festival. Best wishes from the organising team - Jeff, Ali, Richard, Denise, Jonathan, Trish, Guy, Bernard, Stan, Erika, Odette, Gary, John, Mary, Vicky, Colin, Nigel, Sue, Paul, Eddie, Brian, Emma and everybody else who volunteered their time to make the festival happen.

Chorlton's Big Green Festival 2010 - review

Chorlton's Big Green Festival 2010 was bigger and better than ever. Established favourites like the bike parade and the Ceilidh continued to draw crowds, while new additions like the Scarecrow Competition and the fashion show proved a hit with young and old alike. Chorlton's Big Green Festival 2009 - review

We estimate that over 3,000 people came on Saturday, April 4th 2009 to the first Chorlton's Big Green Festival. Starting with a colourful bike parade through Chorlton and ending at midnight with a Ceilidh, the whole day was a fantastic success. The mix of food and craft stalls, talks, workshops and music worked really well. There are over 120 great photos taken at the festival by Gareth Hacking at:

Big Green Living Streets

If you’re interested in making Chorlton more pedestrian friendly, bike friendly and child friendly then come along to a public meeting on Thursday 27th Sept at 7.30pm upstairs at the Lloyds pub on Wilbraham Rd. Green Chorlton, the organisers of Chorlton’s Big Green Festival, are starting up a new campaign called (provisionally) Big Green Living Streets. There’ll be a couple of short speeches to inspire but it will be mainly an opportunity for discussion leading to action.

Our view is that turning the streets of Chorlton into living streets where cyclists, pedestrians and children feel safe is about more than just crossings, speed limits, lollipop people and speed humps though they are all important. It is about a change in the balance of rights of street users and about the whole street environment, about the pavement design, planting, ownership and responsibility, and beauty. Streets should connect the people and shops on either side rather than separate them. Pavements should be a pleasure to walk along rather than an obstacle course. Children should be able to walk to school without parents worrying.

We have plenty of ideas but no decisions have been made about where to prioritise action. Come along to the meeting and help to make Chorlton a friendlier, prettier and better place to be.
