What is dichloromethane (DCM) and why is it becoming a bigger topic in plastics fabrication?

If you work in signage, fabrication or construction, you may already know DCM (dichloromethane, also known as methylene chloride) as a solvent used in products such as paint st*****rs and some plastic bonding adhesives.

What many people don’t realise is just how hazardous it can be to work with.

DCM is highly volatile, meaning vapours can build up quickly in poorly ventilated environments. It can also be absorbed through the skin. Overexposure has been linked to symptoms including dizziness, headaches, nausea and respiratory irritation, with severe exposure carrying the risk of unconsciousness, suffocation and even death.

Because of these risks, the EU restricted many consumer and professional uses of DCM back in 2009, with further restrictions continuing globally. In the UK, DCM-based paint st*****rs are heavily regulated and restricted to trained professionals working under controlled conditions.

For plastic fabricators, sign makers and installers, this has increased demand for safer alternatives; particularly for acrylic bonding applications where ventilation can sometimes be challenging on-site.

As a result, DCM-free solvent cements are becoming an increasingly important option within the industry.

Products such as ACRIFIX® 1S 0116 and 1S 0117 were developed as DCM-free alternatives for bonding acrylic, while also offering compatibility with materials including ABS, PS and PVC (testing is always recommended before use).

It’s a good reminder that when selecting adhesives and solvents, performance is only one part of the equation; operator safety and working environment matter too.

Always consult the relevant technical and safety data sheets before use.

Wood is a proven construction material, but when weight and moisture resistance matter, fabricators are increasingly switching to PET foam core.

So how easy is it to work with?

Gurit PET foam core is designed for standard fabrication workflows, no specialist tooling required.

Fabrication benefits:
• Works with standard cutting and machining tools
• Can be shaped using cuts, grooves and scoring techniques
• Thermoformable for curved and complex components
• Suitable for vacuum infusion, wet laminating, prepreg and bonding
• Compatible with a wide range of resins
• Consistent structure for reliable processing results

Compared to traditional alternatives:
• More stable and consistent than PU/ISO foams
• Better screw retention once laminated than PP honeycomb
• Structural performance without the need for framing (unlike EPS/XPS foams)

Made from PET, offcuts can also be recycled when kept clean—supporting waste reduction on site and in fabrication environments.

🚴🏁 FINAL CHECKPOINT REACHED! 🎉

I can’t think of a more fitting end. After almost 13 months of cycling, rowing and team effort, the Amari Plastics Manchester team has officially completed our virtual journey around the UK & Ireland, finishing back at our home base on World Bicycle Day! 🌍🚲

Together, we’ve covered an incredible 5,151km, hitting checkpoints for all 28 Maggie’s centres and 33 Vink sites along the way as part of Vink’s 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Most importantly, we’ve been raising money for Maggie's Oldham. Maggie’s Oldham is a fantastic local cancer support centre providing free practical and emotional support to people with cancer and their families.

We’ve raised £545 of our £1,000 target, and we want to say a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us along the way. 👏

Special thanks to:
👏 Mark @ Cheshire Vehicle Windows
👏 Andy Farrell @ Fabriplas
👏 Chris Byrne @ 3A Composites
👏 Coralene @ Vink Service Centre
👏 Our own wonderful team members Ray, Sue, Dave, Lisa, Toni, Jemma, Nicola, Jecy, Joe – who cycled and rowed the rest!

This challenge has been powered by teamwork, determination, a lot of sweat… and a brilliant cause that means so much to our local community.

There’s still time to help us hit our £1,000 goal. Every donation makes a difference. 💛

We’ve reached our Amari Plastics Norwich checkpoint!

This means there is ONE FINAL CHECKPOINT to go, which will take back to home back at Amari Plastics Manchester.

Fuel costs are up and they’re not looking like they’ll be dropping any time soon.

For transport operators and vehicle converters, weight has a direct impact on efficiency.

That’s where Gurit PET foam core makes a difference.

• Up to 66% lighter than plywood or MDF
• Reduced overall vehicle weight
• Improved fuel efficiency over time
• Potential for increased payload capacity
• Durable, moisture-resistant core for long service life

Designed for lightweight panel builds across:

🚚 Commercial vehicles & conversions: Walls, floors, doors, interior structures
🚐 Leisure vehicles: Cabinetry, partitions, flooring
🚆 Rail & transport interiors: Interior panels, furniture and partitions

Less weight doesn’t just improve performance, it can reduce running costs.

If you’re building with plywood, MDF or particle board, you could be carrying unnecessary weight on every journey.

Not long to go now… we’ve arrived at our Maggie’s Cambridge checkpoint.

Back in May 2025, we started a fundraising journey to support Maggie's Oldham .

We set about a 5,151km virtual tour around the UK and Ireland, with checkpoints at 28 Maggie’s Centres and 33 Vink sites.

Although the travel is virtual, the hard work has been -very- real, as we’ve used static bikes, rowing machines, and even real swimming to clock up the kilometers to move us along our journey map.

There’s still time to donate as we had into the final few checkpoints.

There are only a few checkpoints left!

It’s been a huge undertaking for the Manchester team, along with some wonderful customers and suppliers who have helped us out along the way by donating kilometers they’ve cycled, rowed or swam for us!

🚴‍♂️ We’ve travelled: 4608km / 5151km (89%)

Follow us through our last few checkpoints, as we conclude our incredible journey to raise money for Maggie’s Oldham.
