Packed with the DJI Mini 5 Pro to capture a substantial amount of aerial imagery and video including these exampled 180-degree aerial panoramas of Kyle of Tongue, Scourie Bay, River Coe, Glencoe and The Three Sisters of Glencoe.

People often say aerial mapping can’t properly be done on a non SDK drone.
Honestly, with the right planning and flying technique, that simply is not true.

This was manually flown using a carefully planned flight path at constant height, constant speed and timed image capture. No automated mapping app involved.

You need to think ahead, understand overlap, terrain, obstacles and exactly where the aircraft needs to be before take off.

One of the real advantages of smaller drones is flexibility.
There are sites where larger aircraft face operational or regulatory limitations, yet a lightweight drone can still safely gather excellent mapping data.

For instance and during a recent training exercise on ARC Aerial Imaging’s ‘Drone Aerial Imaging Masterclass Course for Mapping, Surveying and Photogrammetry’, a non-enterprise UAV was manually operated to complete a survey. By carefully applying appropriate imaging techniques such as controlling flight speed, sensor settings and maintaining proper overlap, the operator achieved reliable results. This even included managing lateral imaging gains, a detail that can be challenging to execute manually.

The outcome - a fully orthorectified orthomosaic, generated from imagery captured at 2 cm GSD and enhanced with ground control points to ensure positional accuracy.

Day ‘2.5’ of ARC Aerial Imaging’s ‘Drone Aerial Imaging Masterclass Course for Mapping, Surveying and Photogrammetry’ involved putting into practice the learning and imaging planning methodologies that its attendees have so far gained in by undertaking their individual surveying exercises with their UAVs and aerial sensing.

Just as it previously did when serving in the Royal Air Force on several front-line tactical flying squadrons, a ‘debrief’ was held afterwards over a beer. Debriefing is normal practice during the course and it helps evaluate whether the objectives of each exercise was met and, in the context of training and development, reinforce good learning practices from the fundamentals element of the course by sharing those lessons learned among all participants.

The start of another four-day training programme featuring both of our industry-leading ‘Drone Aerial Imaging Masterclass Course for Mapping, Surveying and Photogrammetry’ and ‘Agisoft Metashape Pro SfM Photogrammetry Processing Course’ which is being held at its stunning North Yorkshire training facility.

And it’s a notable one because on this occasion its participants undertook the inaugural course that I delivered way back in 2017, returning to update their knowledge and their continous professional development in light of significant advancements in UAS and aerial sensing technologies used in those commercial applications compared to what was used back then - a lot has changed since the days of mapping with a 12MP Phantom 3 and 16MP Inspire series of drones.
