Sometimes the best thing we can do with your drawing is question it.

Material specified. Dimensions set. Tolerances defined.

Easy. Machine it.

Usually.

But occasionally something deserves another look.

A tolerance might be unnecessarily tight. A material might not suit the working environment. A particular feature might create problems during machining or in use.

After more than 30 years working with engineering plastics, PSR knows that pressing ahead isn’t always the quickest route forward.

If something looks worth checking, we’ll flag it before machining.

A short conversation at the beginning is usually preferable to a much longer one after the parts have been made.

Nylon or POM-C?

Add water to the conversation and things get interesting.

Nylon is strong, tough and highly wear resistant, but it absorbs more moisture.

POM-C has very low moisture absorption and excellent dimensional stability.

So when a component needs to maintain its dimensions around water, humidity or regular washdown, that difference can become important.

Does that make POM-C better than nylon?

No.

It makes it better suited to some jobs.

That distinction sits at the heart of how PSR approaches material selection. We look at where the component runs, what it touches and what it actually needs to withstand.

A datasheet gives you properties.

The application tells you which ones matter.

Spare a thought for the humble wear strip.

It isn’t particularly glamorous.

It probably won’t feature prominently in the photos when a new production line is commissioned.

But get the material, dimensions or running surface wrong and everyone suddenly knows exactly where it is.

Wear strips and guides can spend thousands of hours running against chains, belts, products and other components.

That means friction, speed, load and wear all need considering for something that, on a drawing, might look remarkably simple.

PSR machines these components regularly for conveyors and materials-handling systems.

Sometimes the least exciting component on the machine has one of the most important jobs.

“Make it from nylon.”

Sounds specific.

It really isn’t.

PSR works with standard PA6, oil-filled, wax-modified, heat-stabilised, impact-resistant, glass-filled, food-contact and other specialist grades. And then there’s Nylon 66.

One application might need stiffness. Another lower friction. Another better performance around heat or moisture.

So the useful question isn’t simply whether nylon will work.

It’s *which nylon will work*.

That distinction can be the difference between a component that quietly does its job for years and one that keeps demanding attention.

A small plastic component can stop a very expensive machine.

Size and importance have surprisingly little to do with each other.

A worn guide, roller, bush or wear strip might be one of the smallest components on a production line. But if that line can’t run without it, suddenly it’s the most important component in the building.

It’s why PSR takes replacement and urgent parts seriously.

If a machine is down, tell us. We’ll look at what you have, what we need and what can realistically be done.

And if a deadline isn’t possible, we’ll tell you that too.

Because when production has already stopped, an optimistic delivery date that doesn’t materialise isn’t particularly helpful.

PTFE is brilliant. Until you ask it to be something it isn’t.

Low friction. Non-stick. Highly chemically resistant. Able to operate across an unusually wide temperature range.

PTFE has an impressive CV.

High mechanical strength, however, isn’t on it.

That’s the thing about engineering plastics. There is rarely a universally “best” material. There is only a material whose strengths and compromises make sense for the application.

PSR works across PTFE, nylon, acetal, PET, polyethylene, polycarbonate and specialist grades because material selection is often a balancing act.

The question isn’t “What’s the best plastic?”

It’s “What does this part actually need to survive?”

Some parts arrive at PSR as complete technical drawings and STEP files.

Others arrive as a photo of something worn, a rough sketch, or an old component accompanied by: “Can you make another one of these?”

Both are perfectly reasonable places to start.

If there’s enough information to quote accurately, we’ll quote it. If there isn’t, we’ll tell you what we need next, whether that’s a measurement, a little application detail or the physical part itself.

Engineering doesn’t always begin with a beautifully finished CAD file.

Sometimes it begins with a slightly battered piece of plastic on someone’s desk.

There’s a difference between machining engineering plastic components regularly and understanding them deeply.⁠

Regularity builds familiarity. Depth builds judgement.⁠

Depth is knowing when two materials that look interchangeable won’t behave the same once machined.⁠

It’s knowing which details matter to that specific components performance and which ones don’t.⁠

That difference doesn’t show up in capability lists.⁠

It shows up in how components perform in use.

Most of the skill in machining engineering plastic components never shows up on a drawing.

It sits in decisions about sequencing.

About how much material to remove, and when. About how the part should be allowed to relax before it’s finished.

Those choices don’t change what the component looks like. They change how it behaves once it’s installed.

That’s where experience quietly earns its keep.

It’s about choosing a set of behaviours.⁠

How the component slides.⁠
How it wears against another surface.⁠
How it reacts to moisture, heat, or repeated load.⁠

Metals offer strength by default. Engineering plastics offer control.⁠

When components are machined with that in mind, plastic doesn’t just replace metal. It changes what the component is capable of.
