I've made a science radio show and I'm insanely excited about it! Hopefully you’ll be a little excited too after listening to the first episode tomorrow (Thursday 9th October).
When a regular science show for London was proposed to me, I knew it would only work if I could co-present with my pal and fellow science communicator, Michael Lucibella. Happily, Mike said yes, so we headed to the studios of Resonance FM near the Tate Modern to do a test recording. We had so much fun that we decided to keep the audio and use it as the core of our first show, essentially a pilot and proof of concept. It's a little creaky but we think it's too good to keep to ourselves.
We thought long and hard about the name of the show, discarding a dozen clever, obscure, or scientifically nerdy ideas, before fixing on a “does-what-it-says-on-the-tin” approach. After all, giving something a too-clever title can be a barrier to uptake if people can’t actually tell what it is.
So, the pilot episode of *The Science Show* goes out at 8pm, 9th October, on Resonance in what they call the Clear Spot (meaning it’s not listed by name). Subsequent episodes are scheduled for the fourth Tuesday of the month at 5pm, repeated the following Sunday at 10am. That’s like Radio 4 time slots!
As you can imagine, I’m very excited about this, but it’s been a lot of work bringing it to fruition and it’ll take a lot of ongoing commitment to keep it going. I hope you’ll think it’s worth it. I already have some fabulous guests lined up for our next two shows, which go out on 28th October and 25th November.
In case you’re not familiar with Resonance, it’s the Arts Council-backed community radio station for London, broadcasting on 104.4 FM and DAB, streaming live on the Resonance website and Radioplayer, with shows archived on Mixcloud to listen again at any time.
