One of the best bits of our job is meeting interesting people. In this case a retired surgeon, a man with a lifelong passion for classic cars, full-size steam – until recently owning a well-known Fowler DCC road locomotive – and model engineering.
Impressed by an exhibition quality 3 inch scale road locomotive (the Fowler 10nhp Super Lion “King Carnival” - so impressed, in fact, that he bought it) and having recently finished a 23 year build of one of the finest 7 ¼ inch gauge Stanier Duchesses we’ve seen, he set to and built a 4 ½ inch scale version.
Detailed down to the last rivet, the build took him five years – the engine is magnificent, at first glance easily mistaken for a 6 inch scale engine, such is its size.
Latest project is a 7 ¼ inch gauge Ivatt Class 2 – again, being built to the highest standard.
We left in awe of the man, his models and his workshop.
