Another successful inspection campaign completed at Stanlow Refinery working alongside CTP Environment carrying out aerial thermography inspections of multiple Air Cooled Condensers (ACC’s) located within the cracker process area.

Using drone mounted radiometric thermal imaging technology, we were able to safely inspect elevated heat exchange systems and associated pipework from standoff distances without the requirement for scaffolding, rope access, or intrusive working at height activities within a live operational environment.

The inspection focused on identifying thermal anomalies, potential process irregularities, blocked sections, heat loss, and areas of reduced cooling efficiency across the ACC infrastructure. Within petrochemical and refining environments, these systems play a critical role in maintaining process stability and thermal efficiency, particularly around high demand process units such as cracker systems.

Operating within a highly congested industrial environment required detailed planning, strict coordination with site operations, and careful airspace management due to the density of steelwork, pipe racks, process equipment, and live operations surrounding the inspection area.

By combining high resolution thermal imagery with aerial visual inspection data, the survey enabled rapid assessment of the assets while significantly reducing exposure to operational risk and minimising disruption to the plant.

A great example of how remote inspection technology and specialist industrial services can work together to improve safety, efficiency, and maintenance planning within complex petrochemical facilities.

Internal inspection of ACC air supply ducting recently completed within a biomass facility using the Flyability Elios 3 confined space drone.

The ducting formed part of the air supply system feeding the site’s Air Cooled Condenser infrastructure and required internal visual assessment to review overall condition and identify any signs of deterioration, contamination, or airflow restriction.

Using the Elios 3 platform allowed us to safely navigate the internal ductwork and deliver high resolution visual inspection data without the need for confined space entry, scaffold access, or prolonged operational disruption.

Traditional inspection methods for assets such as these can involve significant planning, isolation procedures, access requirements, and increased safety exposure for personnel. Drone technology provides a far more efficient and safer alternative while still delivering detailed inspection intelligence to support maintenance planning and asset integrity programmes.

Applications such as this continue to demonstrate the growing value of confined space drone technology across the biomass, Energy from Waste, and wider power generation sectors.

Key benefits of the inspection included:

• No confined space entry required• Rapid deployment and minimal downtime• High resolution visual inspection data• Safe access to restricted internal infrastructure• Improved maintenance planning and asset visibility

Another spring hanger survey completed today within a complex industrial environment where traditional access would have required extensive scaffolding or rope access.

Spring hanger systems are critical in managing thermal expansion within high-temperature pipework, allowing movement between cold and operating conditions while maintaining correct load distribution. Verifying indicator positions and support condition helps ensure excessive stress is not transferred into anchors, guides or connected equipment.

Many of the supports inspected were located in elevated and restricted access areas throughout the plant. Using the Flyability Elios 3 confined space drone, we captured detailed visual data across multiple hanger assemblies in just a few hours, allowing engineers to review their condition safely without intrusive access methods.

Spring hanger systems are critical components within high temperature pipework networks, designed to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction while maintaining correct load distribution across the piping system. Verifying the hot and cold load settings of these supports is an essential part of maintaining pipework integrity and preventing excessive stress on anchors, guides and connected equipment.

At this facility, multiple pre-set and tensioned spring hanger assemblies were located in extremely difficult to access areas throughout the plant. Traditional inspection methods would have required intrusive access solutions such as extensive scaffolding or rope access, potentially taking several days to construct and remaining in place for weeks in order to complete the inspection safely.

Using the Flyability Elios 3 confined space drone, DJM Aerial Solutions was able to capture detailed visual data of each hanger assembly in just a few hours, allowing engineers to verify indicator positions and assess the condition of the support systems without exposing personnel to working at height or confined access risks.

Remote inspection technology continues to provide a safer and more efficient solution for industrial asset integrity programmes, particularly in complex environments where conventional access methods introduce significant cost, time and safety considerations.

A combined pre and post de-slag First Gas Pass inspection using the Elios 3 confined space drone delivers a complete, evidence-led condition assessment of the boiler during outage.

The pre de-slag inspection captures the boiler in its as-operated condition, allowing engineering teams to document slag distribution, attachment points and gas flow bias before cleaning removes critical evidence. This supports root-cause analysis, targeted de-slag planning and safer decision-making without early manned entry.

The post de-slag inspection then exposes the true condition of the asset, enabling clear assessment of refractory integrity, tube exposure, erosion, deformation and any secondary damage introduced during cleaning. It provides high-quality visual evidence for repair validation, contractor sign-off and return-to-service assurance.

Together, this approach:
• Links deposit behaviour to actual substrate damage, supporting cause-and-effect analysis
• Improves outage efficiency by focusing resources where they add value
• Reduces safety risk by minimising confined space entry
• Strengthens asset integrity records and condition trending across campaigns
• Provides defensible engineering evidence for maintenance planning and governance

Using the Elios 3 within the First Gas Pass transforms boiler inspection from a single snapshot into a structured inspection workflow, delivering greater technical clarity, reduced risk and improved operational outcomes for EfW and biomass facilities.

LiDAR point cloud captured using the Elios 3 during an internal inspection of a clean water sump in Rochester, Kent.

The client had no existing P&ID drawings or as built information, so we delivered a high density LiDAR point cloud to allow post processing into a mesh model and the creation of accurate engineering drawings for future use.

This dataset now provides a reliable digital baseline for inspection planning, maintenance, and asset management, without the need for confined space entry.

Following minor commissioning complications, we were recently tasked with conducting a refractory inspection of a chlorinator using the Elios 3 confined space drone.

Traditional inspection methods would have required intrusive access, scaffolding, and extended downtime, exposing personnel to hazardous conditions. By deploying the Elios 3, we were able to safely capture high-resolution visual data from within the asset, ensuring the refractory lining could be assessed accurately and efficiently.

This approach not only minimises disruption to operations but also significantly reduces risk, cost, and time associated with conventional inspection methods.

At DJM Aerial Solutions, we continue to utilise advanced drone technology to support industrial clients across the UK, delivering safe, precise, and cost-effective inspection services for complex and confined environments.
