Ever wondered what actually happens during a subsidence survey? We've broken it down into some easy-to-follow steps:

Step 1 - An inspector will visually inspect your home for any signs of subsidence (cracks, sticking windows, etc)

Step 2 - The inspector will then test the soil conditions to determine whether they are a contributing factor and take measurements to determine whether there has been any settlement or movement of the ground.

Step 3 - Finally, they will review historic data and records to understand your home's history and identify any previous subsidence issues.

Mental health matters every day of the year, but this month we gave our team the chance to really slow down and talk about it.

At Mainmark, we believe a healthy team starts with people feeling safe, supported, and valued. As part of World Mental Health Week, our teams came together through an informal coffee catch-up and a wellbeing walk, creating space for open conversations and personal reflection.

One week of awareness is a good start, but a workplace that genuinely cares all year round is even better.

If you have discovered signs of structural movement in your home, then you may have questions regarding subsidence and insurance.

Understanding the ins and outs of subsidence and insurance and why insurers take subsidence damage seriously, can help you take the appropriate action to protect your property.

For homeowners, most standard UK home insurance policies include cover for subsidence but only under the following circumstances:

- The damage is new and not pre-existing.
- The cause is sudden and not due to poor maintenance.
- It also affects the main structure of the property (external works such as patios or driveways may only be covered if the house itself is damaged).

After a very wet winter, and with the UK seeing a lot of rain recently, it’s important to check your home for any signs of ground movement.

Increased rainfall can saturate the ground, causing extra pressure on your home's foundations. This can sometimes reveal signs of subsidence.

What to look out for:
- Any new cracks in the walls, ceilings or around windows and doors
- Cracks getting worse over time
- Doors and windows sticking
- Uneven floors or gaps around frames

If you're spotting these signs, get in contact with Mainmark: https://mainmark.co.uk/who-we-are/contact-us/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=contactus

A big concern for many homeowners is just how disruptive structural work will be. The good news is that it doesn’t always have to be.

Many modern ground engineering solutions can help manage ground instability without the need for you to leave your home. In fact, in many cases you can carry on with your day as usual while the work is being completed.

Projects can often be finished in just a few days, which is a big improvement compared to traditional underpinning that can take weeks, or even months.

Subsidence isn't something that just happens overnight. When the ground beneath your home starts shifting, it may begin to show these early signs...

- Sticking doors and windows
- Stepped cracks in brickwork, especially along the mortar line
- Uneven floors
- Cracks in walls, ceilings or floors
- Gaps between window or door frames

Spotting these signs can make a big difference.

Let’s talk horizontal cracks...

Have you noticed a gap forming between your wall and ceiling? Or cracks developing between bricks outside?

And unfortunately… it’s not always something a bit of filler can fix.

Left unchecked, these cracks can worsen over time, so it’s important to understand what’s really behind them.

A professional site inspection can help identify the issue and recommend the right solution.

Cracks in walls can understandably worry homeowners, but not every crack is a sign of a major structural issue. In many cases, cracks appear due to normal building settlement, changes in temperature, or natural movement in construction materials over time.

However, sometimes it can reflect an underlying issue, so it is still important to keep an eye on any around your home and pay attention to:
- Size
- Pattern
- Location

If you notice cracks appearing or worsening in your home, it’s always a good idea to seek professional advice early on. An experienced ground engineering specialist can assess the situation, determine the underlying cause, and recommend the most appropriate next steps.

If you own a historic home, you’ll know just how full of character and beauty they are. But did you know they can also be more vulnerable to ground movement over time?

Changes in the ground beneath a property can lead to movement in the structure, which may appear as cracks in walls, uneven floors, or sticking windows and doors.

It’s important to keep an eye out for these signs, as acting early can save you a bigger headache down the line.

A stair step crack is one of the most common cracks found in homes across the UK and often point towards foundation movement, structural settlement or subsidence.

How to identify them?
They can be found along the mortar joints in brickwork creating a stepped pattern that often follows a diagonal line across the wall and are usually the visible result of movement from within the structure or beneath it.

However, if you do spot one of these cracks at your home, do not panic, instead keep an eye on it and if you notice it getting wider or longer then we would recommend seeking a professional assessment to help you find the root cause.
