This page is to inform and consult on a proposal put forward by LongBay SeaPower and Halcyon Tidal Power who are working together to create West Somerset tidal energy lagoon. The innovative and exciting regeneration proposals put forward by ‘LongBay SeaPower' and Halcyon Tidal Power involve using the natural resources of the Bristol Channel to provide clean renewable energy, simultaneously combat
ing coastal erosion, possible future flooding and regenerating the local economy making West Somerset a unique place to visit and live. The proposals would see the creation of a lagoon enclosing over 50 sq km of water between Culvercliff in Minehead and Blue Ben Point in between West and East Quantoxhead. The renewable energy scheme will use the power of the impounded water to generate electricity to the scale not yet seen in the field of tidal range energy. LongBay SeaPower and Halcyon Tidal Power scheme would go a long way to achieving the Governments renewable energy targets but will also provide:
Protection for the West Somerset Coast from coastal erosion and flooding. Protected permanent water for boating and other tourist’s activities. A protected marina with unrestricted access to deep water for at least 200 vessels with future potential for up to 600 vessels of all sizes. A ferry terminal for links with South Wales and other possible destinations for West Somerset and North Devon. A dock for berthing mid-sized cruise ships and expedition vessels. Unlimited access to the Bristol Channel via sea locks. Infrastructure for all ancillary ‘marina’ services will also be developed. After consultation, a possible upgrading of facilities for the RNLI and other emergency service facilities could be provided. A route along the top of the lagoon wall, suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, athletes and a tram like system providing transport to and from Minehead.
