Another milestone from our 40‑year journey — and a machine that marked a real shift in how we approached design.

This customer ran both a multi‑head gas cutter and a plasma system, and this installation was the first Techserv machine to feature extruded and waterjet‑cut aluminium construction. At the time, almost every cutting machine on the market was a heavy steel fabrication. We took a different path.

By using aluminium for the gantry and structural components, we achieved low mass, high stiffness, faster acceleration, and smoother motion — all without compromising durability. It was a bold move in the late ’90s and early 2000s, but it set the tone for the engineering philosophy we still follow today:

Simple by design. Efficient in motion. Built for real‑world production.

A look back at the early days of CNC control at Techserv as we celebrate 40 years of British engineering.

Before we developed our own PC‑based CNC system, many of our machines were powered by Burny controllers. They were solid, dependable units — and you can clearly see the roots of our “keep it simple” philosophy in the clean, uncluttered layout of the control panel.

Those early systems taught us a lot:

how operators interact with controls on a busy shop floor

what matters (and what doesn’t) when you’re cutting steel all day

why simplicity, reliability and clarity always win

That experience directly shaped the controller we build today — designed in‑house, refined over decades, and trusted across plasma, gas and waterjet machines in workshops, universities, shipyards and steel processors.

Another milestone from the Techserv archives as we celebrate 40 years of British engineering.
This machine is one of our very first waterjet systems, built around 1999. Waterjet cutting was still a relatively young technology at the time, but even then we saw its potential — a clean, precise, cold cutting process capable of handling an extraordinary range of materials.
Since that first installation, our waterjets have cut everything from cake and foam to thick metals, composites, stone, and even parts for Formula 1 cars and spacecraft. It’s a process that rewards accuracy, reliability and smart engineering — values that have shaped Techserv since day one.
As we mark our 40th year, these early machines remind us how far we’ve come: from pioneering waterjet systems in the late ’90s to today’s advanced CNC plasma, gas and waterjet machines built right here in the UK, powered by our own in house control system.

Another piece of Techserv history — and a reminder of what long‑term engineering really looks like.

This six‑head gas cutting machine was built in 1998. Twenty‑six years later, it’s still in daily production. In an industry where many machines are considered “end of life” after a decade, seeing a Techserv system still cutting thick steel with precision after more than two decades is something we’re incredibly proud of. It speaks to the philosophy that’s guided us for 40 years: Build it well. Build it locally. Support it for life.

As we celebrate Techserv’s 40th anniversary this year, we’re sharing photos of past projects that helped shape who we are today — British‑built CNC plasma, gas and waterjet systems designed with longevity, serviceability and real‑world reliability at their core. Techserv turns 40 this year — four decades of British engineering, innovation, and partnership.

To mark the milestone, we’re sharing a few photos from the archives. This one shows a plate processing machine we built for the British Steel Scunthorpe plate mill — one of four systems we supplied to support heavy‑duty production at a site that’s now sadly gone. It’s a reminder of the scale of projects we’ve delivered and the industries we’ve helped shape.

From those early installations to today’s CNC plasma, gas and waterjet cutting systems, one thing hasn’t changed:
every Techserv machine is designed, built and supported here in the UK.

Over the last 40 years we’ve grown from a small engineering team into a trusted manufacturer serving fabrication shops, shipyards, steel processors, universities, and global industrial clients.
