If your home, farm or holiday let gets its water from a borehole, spring or well, this one’s worth a read.

The Drinking Water Inspectorate’s latest report found E. coli or Enterococci in 451 private water supplies across England last year. It also found that fewer than half of private supply risk assessments are up to date.

Mains water is tested constantly. Private supplies rely on owners keeping on top of things, so regular sampling and properly maintained treatment, like UV systems, really matter.

A leisure centre in Jersey had to close for a few days recently after routine water testing picked up Legionella in some of its showers and basins. Nobody has been reported ill, and the pools themselves were fine.

The reassuring part is that the checks worked. Testing caught it early, so the site could be cleaned and retested before it became a bigger problem.

Not all of our water sampling happens on dry land.

Our engineers also take drinking water samples on board ships while they're in dock. Ships store their own water in tanks, and it can sit there for a while, so it's checked just like the water in a building.

The samples go off to a UKAS accredited lab, and we go through the results with the client afterwards.

If you look after a building with cold water storage tanks, now's a good time to get them checked before winter.

Tanks should be inspected at least once a year. Sediment and debris build up over time, and that gives bacteria something to grow on. If a tank needs it, we clean and disinfect it and give you a certificate for your records.

For schools, October half term is ideal while the building's quiet.

Danny had a trip over to the east coast last week, fitting a new break tank at a caravan park.

The pool was being topped up automatically straight from the mains. The concern was that, in the right conditions, chlorinated water could be drawn back out of the pool and into the supply. That's not something you want happening.

The break tank separates the two with an air gap, so there's no way for pool water to find its way back. It's a neat job from Danny as always.

Heading into winter, a lot of buildings see quieter periods, schools over the holidays, hotels with seasonal closures, offices running with fewer people in. That means some water outlets get used a lot less than usual.

Water that sits still for long periods is exactly the kind of condition Legionella can take hold in. A simple weekly flushing routine for rarely used taps and outlets makes a real difference.

It's usually triggered by something specific, a system that's been out of use for a while, a new installation, discoloured water, or a positive result from testing. It's not something every water system needs as a matter of course.

Under UK health and safety law, businesses with water systems need to appoint a "competent person" to manage Legionella risk. It doesn't have to be an engineer or specialist, it just needs to be someone with the right knowledge, training and authority to make sure controls are actually carried out.
