I had to make an unusual request to some of my clients yesterday , " do you mind if I put my phone in your freezer please ?" As my phone was getting so hot in the van it was shutting down my aps & not allowing payments to be taken !

☀️🔧 1st of 10 repairs completed today!
This hot weather doesn’t just affect us… it affects mobility scooters too. High temperatures can cause components and electrical connections to expand, often leading to poor connections, intermittent faults, warning lights, or sudden cut-outs.
One of today’s jobs also needed corrosion cleaning on the charger input — something I’m seeing more and more of lately after the wet weather we had previously.
A few simple tips during hot weather:
• Try to keep your scooter parked in the shade whenever possible
• Avoid leaving LCD displays/screens baking in direct sunlight for long periods, as excessive heat can considerably shorten their lifespan
• Keep charger sockets dry and clean
• If your scooter starts behaving oddly in hot weather, don’t ignore it — heat can highlight underlying faults before they become major breakdowns
After over 35 years in the trade, I can honestly say weather conditions play a far bigger part in mobility scooter reliability than many people realise.
But the most important thing is to keep yourself safe !

I’ve been a bit quiet online lately, and a few people have asked if everything’s alright… thankfully yes, all good here 👍
The main reason is that I’ve been busy completely refitting and reorganising the workshop, while also investing heavily in a lot more specialist equipment to make my job easier, more efficient, and even more functional for the future.
It’s been a massive job behind the scenes — many nights working right through until 11pm — but it’s all being done with one goal in mind… improving the service I provide to my customers across South Wales.
Still not quite finished yet, but I’m getting there slowly 😅
Sometimes people only see the finished result, not the long hours, planning, investment, and effort that goes into keeping a one-man business moving forward. But I genuinely enjoy what I do, and every improvement means I can continue offering better diagnostics, repairs, servicing, battery testing, programming, and support for your mobility equipment.

SUN, SEA… AND YOUR MOBILITY SCOOTER
More and more people are taking their mobility scooters and powerchairs abroad now — and honestly, why shouldn’t you? Mobility problems shouldn’t stop anyone enjoying a holiday, feeling independent, or exploring somewhere new.
But travelling abroad with a scooter takes a bit of planning, and I’ve seen holidays nearly ruined because people were given bad advice or didn’t realise certain things before they flew.
A few important tips from The Mobility Wizard:
• ALWAYS check with the airline before travelling.
Not all airlines allow the same battery types, especially lithium batteries. Some have strict watt-hour limits and rules about removing batteries for transport.
• Get your batteries tested before you go.
A weak battery might manage your local shops… but airports, promenades, hills, and hot weather can finish them off very quickly.
• Check your charger voltage compatibility.
Most modern chargers are fine on 110–240v, but check before plugging it in abroad. You may only need a travel adapter — or you could damage the charger.
• Think about terrain.
That lovely beach-front holiday brochure doesn’t mention cobbles, steep hills, gravel paths, or rough pavements. Small boot scooters can struggle badly in some resorts.
• Insurance matters.
Make sure your scooter is covered abroad for accidental damage, theft, and breakdowns.
• Protect electronics from heat and moisture.
Scooters and powerchairs hate sea air, heavy condensation, and being left baking in the sun.
• Label your scooter clearly.
Put your name, phone number, hotel name, and battery instructions on it before flying.
• Take photos before check-in.
Sadly, airport damage does happen. Photos can help massively if you need to make a claim.
One thing I absolutely love seeing is customers sending me photos from Spain, Greece, Portugal, or cruising around on holiday with a smile on their face. That independence means everything.

As somebody who has worked on mobility scooters, powerchairs and wheelchairs for over 35 years, I can honestly say many breakdowns could have been prevented with simple maintenance and a little understanding of how these machines actually work.
A mobility scooter is not just “a scooter.” It’s a person’s independence. Their freedom. Their way of getting shopping, seeing family, visiting friends, attending appointments or simply enjoying life.
That’s why looking after them properly matters.
BATTERIES
The biggest problem I see is battery neglect.
People often say: “But I hardly used it.”
Ironically, that can sometimes damage batteries faster than regular use.
Mobility batteries like to be charged properly and regularly. Leaving a scooter standing for weeks with flat or partially discharged batteries causes sulphation inside AGM batteries, reducing capacity and performance.
Cold weather also affects battery efficiency massively. A battery can appear fine in summer, then suddenly struggle in winter.
Modern lithium systems are excellent when correctly designed and installed, but cheap conversions or incorrect chargers can create serious reliability and safety problems.
A battery is not just about voltage. A battery can show “full” and still be weak under load.
That’s why proper testing equipment matters.
WATER DAMAGE
Another huge killer is water ingress.
Mobility scooters may be used outside, but many are NOT waterproof.
I regularly see: • Corroded connectors • Damaged controllers • Wet brakes • Rusted motors • Failed tiller looms • Joysticks full of moisture
Even washing a scooter incorrectly with a hosepipe can cause expensive damage.
Rain covers help. Storage helps. Regular inspections help even more.
THE LITTLE FAULTS THAT BECOME BIG ONES
One slightly loose connection… One worn brush… One damaged wire inside a tiller loom…
Left long enough, these tiny faults often become major breakdowns.
Sometimes a scooter cuts out only when turning left or right. Many people think it’s “electronics.” Very often it’s simply wiring inside the steering column flexing for years until the copper strands break internally.
The scooter is actually trying to tell you there’s a problem long before total failure.
FLASH CODES – YOUR SCOOTER TALKING TO YOU
Modern scooters communicate faults using flash codes or beep sequences.
Those flashes are not random.
They may indicate: • Brake faults • Low battery voltage • Throttle problems • Motor issues • Controller overheating • Charger inhibition • Wiring faults
Different controllers use different systems, but understanding fault codes can save hours of guesswork.
SERVICING MATTERS
A proper service is not “just checking tyres.”
A real service should include: • Battery load testing • Brake checks • Motor inspection • Wiring inspection • Charger testing • Tyre condition and pressures • Steering and suspension checks • Controller diagnostics • Safety inspection
Preventative maintenance is always cheaper than major repairs.
THE HUMAN SIDE
One thing I’ve learned over the years…
Many customers are frightened when their scooter develops a fault because they suddenly realise how much they depend on it.
That’s why I always try to explain faults clearly, honestly and in plain English.
No jargon. No pressure. No nonsense.
Just honest advice from somebody who genuinely cares about keeping people mobile and independent.

What a beautiful day here in South Wales.
The sun is shining, folk are smiling, gardens are getting sorted, and mobility scooters all over the valleys are waking up from their winter hibernation.
There’s something special about a sunny Bank Holiday weekend. It gives people freedom again… the freedom to get out, see family, visit the beach, wander the shops, sit outside with a coffee, or simply enjoy the fresh air and independence we often take for granted.
Just a little reminder from The Mobility Wizard — if your scooter has been stood for weeks or months, check those batteries are fully charged, tyres are inflated correctly, and listen for any unusual noises before heading out on longer journeys.
