New machine day! This is a boxford 240TCL CNC lathe, a machine I’ve been after for a while. It needs completely stripping out and new ck tell hardware and software to ‘revamp’ it as it’s currently stuck in 1984… this should be a very useful addition to the workshop when it’s up and running for some of my regular work and also for the steam engines… more on this soon.

A bit more work done on the Foster. Again, descriptions are in the photographs.

Some more work on the Thomas II. The owner wasn’t happy with how someone has previously made the crankpins and set the return cranks so I was asked to machine out the original crankpins, make new ones and new return cranks from blanks he had supplied.

Quite a fun job was making these brass kitchen table feet for the kitchen people. Starting off as a fret, 45 degree chamfers were milled it to chamfer the edges and create fold lines before soldering the folded corners up. Following a bit of cleanup they looked great! No photos of them on the actual table unfortunately.

And another project… this is a Wallis and Steevens water bowser (the famous steam engine builders of Basingstoke). It had been sitting in a hedge near the field where I rebuilt the landrover and after some discussions with the owner, it can home with me! From my little research I think it’s from 1900-1920 ish. Supposedly it was used by a local roller crew to tarmac the roads around my parents house which is a nice local link. Not sitting on the correct style wheels but watch this space….

A bit more work on the Foster. The design calls for the tender sides to be butt welded to the wrapper. This ain’t as per the full sized engine so I decided they needed to be fl**ged properly. I has a bolster and clamping plate profiled out which I then radiused to form the fl**ge. Plenty of heat on the tender sides and various hammers produced a fair result I think. Couldn’t resist machining the tender side step castings then it was on to the ash pan.

A little bit more work for the Baguley-Drewery. This time coupling and connecting rods. Not much machining to show, drill and bore the holes for the bearings, welding on spacers to achieve the correct thickness around the bearings and welding ‘cheats’ for the centre knuckle joint. Bearings are all a press fit and a mixture of deep groove and self aligning to cope with axle articulation. The timing belt pulley is for his engine which needed boring out and a keyway.

In May, Wife dragged me out the workshop to Fawley hill for their last steam rally. Fantastic day with some really interesting engines. If you ever get the chance to visit Fawley Hill for any of their other open days I’d thoroughly recommend it!

April last year saw a bit more work done on the Foster. Progress is always slow on these bigger projects as I only work on them in between customer work, but progress is progress. Descriptions in the photographs.
