Webinar recap: Mitigating Fire Risks (in the Recycling Industry).

🖥️ Yesterday, in partnership with The Recycling Association, we delivered a webinar on mitigating fire risks.

♻️ We are proud of our membership in this association and our long-standing commitment to the global recycling industry, which faces increasing challenges due to fire risks.

💥 Waste and recycling facilities face one of the industry’s most serious risks: fire. Even the smallest spark can lead to costly downtime, equipment loss and rising insurance premiums. This session will look at how a proactive approach not only protects facilities but also creates measurable business value.

💡 The session covered an overview of the risk landscape, a deep dive into battery technologies, and proven countermeasures, covering operating processes, bulk storage areas and refuse collection vehicles - all risk areas that GreCon can address with tailored solutions, via its PROTECTOR portfolio and in some cases relying on the input from specialist and trusted partners.

📈 Impact & Emerging Trends
🔥 1,200+ battery-related fires in UK waste/recycling (2023–24) — up 71 % year-on-year (Source: NFCC).
🔥 94 % of UK local authorities say battery fires in bin lorries/waste sites are increasing (Source: Material Focus).
🔥 Lithium batteries are now linked to ~48% of all UK waste fires (Source: TRUSTMARK).
🔥 Cost estimates are ~£158 m/yr, with industry commentary suggesting the broader impact exceeds £1 bn (Source: NFCC).
🔥 One operator’s data: 238 facility fires & 116 vehicle fires in 2024 (Source: Veolia).
🔥 In Ireland, multiple significant recycling facility fires occurred recently; fire chiefs note a clear increase in battery-related fire risks (Source: The Journal).

🤝 The session was facilitated by Paul Sanderson, introduced by Jonathan Hamill, and the main topic was covered by Oscar Little.

👷‍♂️ With a background in mechanical engineering, Oscar has supported countless recycling facilities across the UK and Ireland by enhancing safety with advanced industrial fire protection and spark detection systems. Drawing on his technical expertise, he specialises in the design and implementation of tailored protection solutions that safeguard critical equipment, reduce downtime, and strengthen safety in high-risk industrial environments.

🤙 If you would like to schedule a meeting to discuss how we can help, please let us know (0191 4147200 or [email protected]).

💡 We would also be happy to extend this webinar to other interested groups or organisations (e.g. risk and insurance professionals) as part of our wider outreach activities.

🎉 We’re pleased to announce our Cyber Essentials recertification, thanks to the ongoing and active support of our IT partner, IT, and oversight from our group IT department.

Cyber Essentials is a Government-backed certification scheme that helps keep your organisation’s and your customers’ data safe from cyber attacks. We believe it is a business essential for security, trust, and credibility.

The NCSC recommends Cyber Essentials as the minimum cybersecurity standard for all organisations, with a baseline of 5 technical controls that every business should implement to safeguard against cyberattacks.

We offer technologies that protect and optimise - driven by people who live responsibility. We believe that our commitment to Cyber Essentials and this recertification provides additional reassurance for our customers.

Safe. Precise. Successful together. 🌟

🎄 This week, our Managing Director, Jonathan Hamill, attended the Association annual Christmas Lunch at the Institute of Directors (IoD), headquarters at 116 Pall Mall, London - a famous Grade I listed building designed by Regency architect John Nash.

🤝 It was a great opportunity to meet customers and discuss the latest trends and risks facing the industry.

♻️ Recycling plants operate under increasing pressure: higher material volumes, mixed input streams, and 24/7 production make modern facilities more efficient — but also more vulnerable. Hot particles, lithium batteries, and dust accumulations turn everyday operations into potential ignition sources.

💥 We provide proven industrial fire protection systems engineered for the realities of industrial recycling. Our intelligent detection and extinguishing technologies identify ignition risks in milliseconds and eliminate them before a fire or explosion can occur — ensuring process continuity, employee safety, and asset protection.

✔️ We're committed to helping our customers protect their facilities. Since founding GreCon Limited in 1992, we have strengthened our market-leading position in the recycling industry and built a valuable local connection for customers across Great Britain and Ireland, enabling us to respond more effectively and deliver excellent customer service.

📲 Please contact us to discuss how we can help address the risks in your recycling process!

Our engineers were on site at EGGER UK in Hexham this week, carrying out essential service work and supporting one of Europe's most advanced chipboard plants🔧🏭. From inspections at height from an access platform to servicing our Intelligent Extinguishing Modules at the top of a silo, the team showcased the skill and commitment that keep our customers operating safely.

We focus on developing strategic customer partnerships🤝. EGGER in Hexham, near the GreCon Limited offices, is one of Europe's most technologically advanced chipboard production plants. When the Hexham plant opened in 1984, Fagus-GreCon looked after EGGER remotely from Germany. Since founding GreCon Limited in 1992, we have maintained a valuable local connection, enabling us to respond more effectively and deliver excellent customer service.

At GreCon, we're committed to helping our customers protect their facilities; our advanced industrial fire protection solutions support safer production environments and help minimise operational downtime🔥🔍.

We value EGGER's trust in our solutions and service and look forward to continuing this strong partnership for years to come.
