Everyone is looking at the crane.

I'm looking at everything that stopped moving because of it.

Fortunately, early reports indicate there were no fatalities following the incident at the Port of Tyne yesterday. That is by far the most important outcome.

But once the emergency response is over, another reality begins.

A crane out of action doesn't just affect one lift.

It can delay vessels.

It can disrupt cargo operations.

It can impact haulage schedules.

It can affect customers waiting for deliveries.

It can create contractual issues, insurance claims and investigations.

Modern ports are incredibly efficient, but that efficiency relies on thousands of moving parts working together. When one critical asset is suddenly removed, the effects can spread far beyond the quayside.

That's something those of us in the maritime industry understand well, but it's often invisible to everyone else.

As engineers, we'll naturally be interested in what happened. Investigators will establish the facts in due course, and until then speculation helps nobody.

What is already clear, however, is just how much our economy depends on infrastructure that most people never notice until it isn't there.

Engineering isn't just about designing structures.

It's about keeping trade moving.

Duncan is melting!

Office morale manager, snack snaffler and, apparently, the most famous beagle on LinkedIn.

Despite having the office fan set up almost entirely for his benefit, the heat has clearly become too much today.

So naturally, he has taken the only sensible course of action:

Find a cool patch.
Have a cold drink of water
Have a snack.
Lie down.
Repeat as required.

Frankly, there are worse ways to manage a busy workday. How are you coping with the heat?

Yesterday we took some of this year’s post-GCSE work experience students to SMD as part of their week with us at A Squared Engineering.

A huge thank you to our customer SMD for taking the time to show them around and allowing them to see how engineering designs turn into real machines.

That connection matters.

It is one thing to see a model on a screen, or to work on a small component in isolation. It is something else entirely to stand beside the finished equipment and understand the scale, complexity and practical reality behind it.

From there, we went on to Trinity House Newcastle, where the students were able to learn about the long maritime history that has helped shape the industry we work in today.

Engineering does not survive by accident. Maritime does not survive by accident. Offshore does not survive by accident.

It survives because people take the time to open doors, share knowledge, answer questions and show the next generation what is possible.

Work experience is not a box-ticking exercise. Done properly, it can change the way a young person sees their future.

If we want skilled designers, engineers, fabricators, technicians, naval architects and problem-solvers in years to come, we all have a part to play now.

Thank you again to SMD and Trinity House Newcastle for helping us show these young learners what our industry is really about.

Not every useful contribution has to be complicated.

Earlier this year, Alan Conway and the team at TEXO kindly arranged for a number of cable reels to be supplied and delivered to St Mary’s Catholic Primary School in Cullercoats for use in their play area.

It is fantastic to see them now in situ and being put to good use.

A simple bit of industry surplus has become something practical, fun and useful for the children.

A big thank you to Alan and everyone at TEXO for making this happen.

Small gestures like this can make a real difference.

Yesterday marked the end of Archie and Jake’s industry placement with us at A Squared Engineering.

As part of their course at New College Durham, they each needed to complete 315 hours in an industrial placement, and we are extremely proud of what they have achieved. It really has been a privilege to have them with us.

Over their time here, they have learned 2D drafting, 3D modelling, Mathcad, and even turned their hand to a little bit of FEA.

Jake is interested in pursuing a career at the more practical end of heavy engineering, while Archie has applied to join the Royal Navy as an Artificer Apprentice.

More companies need to step up and offer placements like this. It is not as difficult as people think, there is support available, and this is how we keep skills alive in engineering. If we want a future workforce, we have to help train one.

Also, if anyone knows of apprentice-level opportunities in heavy engineering, fabrication, marine engineering or similar, Jake is still looking and would be well worth speaking to.

Well done both. You’ve been a credit to yourselves, New College Durham and Kathy Wadge.

Most of us never think about how our food got onto our table.

We know those bananas weren't grown in the UK, but we rarely give a second thought to how they got here.

The same goes for our cars, washing machines, phones and the steel that built the bridges we drive over every day.

Everything arrived here because someone transported it.

Today is International Day of the Seafarer.

It's a day to recognise the men and women who quietly keep around 90% of global trade moving.

They spend weeks, sometimes months, away from home. They work in some of the harshest environments on Earth. Increasingly, they also find themselves operating through regions affected by conflict, piracy and geopolitical instability.

Yet, for most people, they remain invisible.

We notice empty supermarket shelves, fuel shortages and delayed deliveries, but we rarely stop to think about the people who try to prevent those things from happening in the first place.

So today, spare a thought for the world's seafarers.

Without them, modern life simply wouldn't work.

Thank you for everything you do.

Shouting “Drill more” will not save you money at the petrol pump and it won’t save Aberdeen either.

The bombs have stopped falling on Iran and the Strait of Hormuz is slowly getting back to normal, yet people are still shouting.

The North Sea is a mature, declining basin. More drilling might support some domestic supply and activity, but it won’t set the global price of crude, diesel or petrol and it won’t improve prices at the pump.
Treating the North Sea as yesterday’s problem is just as dangerous. For 50 years, the UK has built serious offshore capability around it:

Engineering
Subsea
Marine operations
Fabrication
Installation
Inspection
Decommissioning
Harsh environment project delivery

This is national capability; barrels will decline but capability won’t. The pit closures of the 1980’s should serve as a lesson that badly managed decline damages communities, skills and supply chains for generations. The most valuable thing in the North Sea is not what sits below the seabed, but what we have built above it.

There’s a North Sea Future Plan, but the test is delivery: will it protect the supply chain before it disappears?
