Very successful evening at Shafleet, Yarmouth and Freshwater Primary School for their Space Camp. We were rewarded with clear skies, and after a night sky tour the pupils enjoyed imagining Jupiter, Andromeda Galaxy and Orion Nebula with the Seestar S50 integrated telescope camera

Another warm welcome offered to us by year 1 pupils at Binstead Primary School. The pupils enjoyed learning all about the moon and we even managed to image the sun with the special solar filter on the Seestar S50 integrated telescope camera funded by Wight Aid

Red videos were not very good as the seeing was poor for this capture period but the blue and green were reasonable.

URGENT NOTICE! (Thurs 8th Jan 2026)
from the Observatory Director (Brian Curd):

"... the extreme weather in the area of Newchurch and the serious accident in Lake means tonight’s meeting is cancelled.

I will be at the observatory tomorrow (Friday 9th) and will open at the normal time for anyone who can make it. 19.30 opening if all is OK.

If there are still weather/flooding problems I will report back by 17.00 tomorrow."

A report on the recent award ceremony by WightAid, in which Vectis Astronomical Society received a major grant, appeared in the Isle of Wight County Press this afternoon. VAS members Dudley Johnson and Elaine Spear represented the Society.

An astronomical society has been awarded funding to help bring the wonders of the night sky closer to the community.
