Transport Planner - Drive the Future with James Shaw & Son
Location: Newton Le Willows Salary: £30,000 - £35,000 per annum, dependent on experience and knowledge Additional Earnings: £50 per on-call shift completed

Key Responsibilities – The Day-to-Day
You will be the vital link between our customers, drivers, and fleet, ensuring every movement is strategic, compliant, and cost-effective.
Fleet Strategy: Plan and optimize daily workloads, leveraging excellent geographical knowledge to ensure maximum fleet utilization and operational efficiency.
Compliance Awareness: Maintain strict adherence to all drivers’ hours and working time directive legislation, protecting both the business and our team.
Driver Management: Act as the primary point of contact and first-line manager for our drivers, providing support, managing workloads, and proactively resolving queries and issues.
Real-Time Adaptability: Expertly react to route planning changes, traffic issues, and customer needs by quickly re-routing and adjusting schedules.
Performance Monitoring: Diligently monitor and report on operations, ensuring all key performance indicators (KPI’s) are consistently met or exceeded.
System Integrity: Maintain and update our Transport Management System (TMS) daily. Experience with GTS system is a distinct advantage.
Maintenance Liaison: Coordinate seamlessly with the on-site garage team to schedule vehicle and trailer inspections and servicing, guaranteeing maximum vehicle availability.
On-Call Duty: Participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota to provide critical support for urgent operational needs (paid at £50 per shift).
Skills and Experience – What You Bring
Proven, hands-on experience as a Transport Planner within a demanding general haulage environment.
Demonstrable experience in managing and supervising a team of professional HGV drivers.
A robust, expert-level understanding of driver’s hours regulations and full vehicle compliance requirements.
Exceptional ability to multitask, prioritize urgent workloads, and maintain focus under pressure.
A confident, proactive attitude and a desire to contribute directly to the success of a growing business.
