I've had quite a few calls over the past few days where people's gas boilers have stopped working due to frozen condensate pipes. So if your boiler stops working it's worth getting a kettle of hot water and pouring it along the condensate pipe outside (that's the white plastic one). That will thaw any ice blocking the pipe. It might save you paying someone like me to come out and do it.

Tip for people with gas boilers. I've been reading some money saving pages and seen some recommending people to turn boilers off at the wall etc. I wouldn't advise this as doing this can blow the fan when turned back on. It's best to give them a wee blast every now and then to keep everything ticking.

Over the past few weeks I've been out to quite a few oil boilers that have sooted up spewing black smoke and been quite time consuming to sort out. The chief cause has been burnt out baffle plates which then affect the combustion in the boiler causing sooting and a huge mess . Because a boiler is running away it doesn't mean situations aren't developing inside that can lead to hefty bills. This is why it's wise to get your boiler serviced on a regular basis. I'm noticing quite a few customers who aren't bothering having their boiler serviced despite it being due for its annual service.

I'm not sure whether they aren't aware of the implications of not having it done but its worth making people aware of the reasons for having it done:

1. Many boilers come with 3, 5, 7 and even now 10 year warranties. If you fail to get the boiler serviced each year then you are invalidating your warranty and will therefore have to pay for any repairs that develop despite having had a good warranty.

2. Many house insurance policies will not pay out on damage caused by a boiler that hasn't been serviced within the last 12 months whether that be a flood, explosion or some other form of damage.

3. Having the boiler serviced can flag up potential future issues and have them resolved there and then at a fraction of the amount it would cost you if left to develop. They also ensure the boiler is set to run at its maximum efficiency saving you money on fuel through the year.

With gas bills now almost 50% more expensive than they were this time 6 months ago, it's now more important than ever to make sure that your boiler is running at its maximum efficiency. Plenty of the boilers I service are using too much gas costing customers more on the gas bills than they really should be paying. Its also worth mentioning that most house insurance policies now won't pay out if you have a flood or explosion caused by your gas boiler if it hasn't been serviced within the past 12 months. Having your oil boiler serviced regularly can avoid situations like this. These folk lost 500 litres of oil due to a flexible oil hose not being changed regularly as they should be. The hose had split allowing the oil to leak into the ground. Much digging ahead and the possibility of having to move out of their property while assessments carried out and potential rebuilding done.

Hi folks. This post isn't intended to scaremonger but more as a warning and showing why it's important to have your gas boiler serviced and checked annually. In the past 2 months in the UK there have been 4 domestic explosions in properties causing massive damage. Unfortunately this latest one has cost a child it's life. By having your boiler serviced you are massively reducing the chances of something like this happening as we check for any gas leaks as part of the service.

It's also worth pointing out that if you have a newish boiler you need to have your boiler serviced every year to keep the warranty valid. And finally its also worth checking your house insurance policies as many house insurance companies will not payout if you have a flood or explosion relating to the boiler if it hasn't been serviced in the past 12 months. Some folk don't realise this.
