ICorr Aberdeen Section – Online Technical Meeting, 30 th June 2026

Join our online technical meeting, featuring the new presentation “Corrosion at Home and
Its Prevention”, with Dr Tony Rizk, Chair of ICorr’s Engineering Training Governing Board
(ETGB).

Developed as part of ICorr commitment to public awareness, civic engagement, and
scientific literacy, this presentation challenges the misconception about “rust engineers”
stereotype and reflects expectations repeatedly highlighted by the Parliamentary &
Scientific Committee, which has encouraged professional institutions to engage more visibly
with civic communities—not only industry.

This first public delivery draws on ICorr technical authority and decades of service to the
global corrosion profession, presenting corrosion in a way that is clear, relevant, and
empowering for the public. While we welcome professional observations from corrosion
specialists, the purpose and content of this outreach initiative are firmly established: to
promote understanding of corrosion as a natural phenomenon and to highlight the
opportunities for a rewarding career across many industries.

Designed to be accessible, practical, and free of technical jargon, the presentation uses
simple realworld examples to show how corrosion develops in everyday settings—and how
it can be prevented or controlled with common household materials and commonsense
actions.

Presenter : Dr. Tony Rizk
MIC Specialist | Independent Corrosion Consultant
Chair, ICorr Engineering Training Governing Board (ETGB)

Date: : 30 th June 2026
Time : 18:00 – 19:00 (BST)
Venue : Zoom (online)
Registration : https://us06web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Xm7HHJBjRs6O6qdELeNePA #/registration

We look forward to your participation and your support for ICorr ongoing work to broaden
public understanding of corrosion science and the valuable careers it enables. http://bit.ly/4g3o42C

As we come into the summer of sporting events, have you ever thought of the engineering works behind the scenes to make this happen?

Millions of fans rely on public transportation during major sporting events. But beyond moving crowds efficiently, these systems face a less visible challenge: corrosion driven by stray current from electrified rail networks.

Dr. David Buxton, MICorr of Intertek CAPSIS sees this as an important corrosion concern. Stray current can accelerate the corrosion rate of unprotected metal surfaces and lead to early failure, increasing repair costs, increased leakage rates and possible safety and environmental risks.

Read more on how corrosion engineers manage stray current risks as part of the wider system safety. https://www.icorr.org/beyond-the-games-hidden-corrosion-challenges-in-mass-transportation-systems/
