An old peat-fired power station in Ireland is being transformed into an innovative large-scale energy storage system.

Instead of relying on lithium, cobalt, or other rare minerals, the project uses carbon dioxide—the same gas often linked to climate concerns. Google and Energy Dome are developing a 200-megawatt-hour facility in County Offaly that stores excess renewable electricity by compressing CO₂ into a liquid. When electricity demand rises, the liquid CO₂ is allowed to expand through a turbine, generating power for the grid.

The system avoids the need for rare-earth mining and complicated global supply chains, instead relying on well-established principles of thermodynamics. Construction plans are already underway, with the site secured, a 10-year grid agreement in place, and operations expected to begin by 2028. The technology has shown enough promise that another similar facility is already being developed in Arizona.
