As part of the refurbishment and extension of 105 Judd Street in London, VariBlast carried out blast cleaning of structural steel in preparation for a subsequent intumescent coating application.

Our team’s work involved preparing the structural steel to the required standard, removing surface contaminants and providing a suitable base for the protective coating system that follows.

Another project completed by the VariBlast team, involving blasting and primer application to structural steelwork within a lift shaft for Mace Construction, on behalf of J Coffey.

With a complex arrangement of steelwork and restricted working space, the lift shaft presented a challenging environment for surface preparation and coating works.

A closer look at failing structural steel.

Before protective coatings can be applied, structural steel needs to be properly prepared to remove corrosion, scale and other surface contaminants.

These images show the condition of steel prior to blasting with extensive rust and visible surface contaminants across the surface and around the fixings.

Our team carried out the blast cleaning to prepare the steel for a subsequent intumescent coating application. The process provides a clean, suitably prepared surface for the coating system to adhere to and helps ensure the steel is ready for its next stage of protection.

Sa 2.5 - what does it mean?

Also known as Near-White Blast Cleaning, it is a very thorough level of surface preparation. It is measured by the Swedish Standard.

It removes almost all visible:

• Rust and corrosion
• Mill scale
• Paint and existing coatings
• Dirt, grease and other contaminants

The result should be a surface that is at least 95% free from visible residues, with only very light staining, shadows or slight discolouration remaining. The previous post illustrates this through a steel profile which is very clean and suitable for additional coatings.
