🎬 Overhead blasting in action.
This process is where abrasive material is directed onto steel surfaces to remove coatings, corrosion, and contaminants in preparation for further protective treatment. It’s a highly controlled process that ensures a consistent surface profile and is particularly effective. The footage highlights both the precision of the technique and the level of surface preparation achievable on site.

Onetrace is currently helping coordinate works across one of our ongoing projects, giving us a clear, real-time view of progress and site activity. By centralising communication and project records in one place, it allows teams on and off site to stay aligned and reduces the risk of delays or duplicated effort. It’s become a key part of how we manage workflow efficiency and maintain visibility across multiple work fronts as the project develops.

Vacuum blasting is a specialist form of abrasive blasting that allows us to prepare surfaces while keeping the surrounding environment clean and controlled.
It works by blasting abrasive media onto the surface to remove coatings, corrosion, or contaminants, while a vacuum system simultaneously recovers the debris and spent abrasive at source. This means the process produces minimal dust and waste, making it ideal for sensitive environments.

At a recent project in Central London, our team carried out comprehensive cleaning and paint removal on a concrete structure, restoring its surface to a clean, bare finish.
The samples clearly show the contrast between the treated areas and the original, painted surface, highlighting the quality and effectiveness of our work. Attention to detail and precision are key to achieving a consistent, high-standard finish, particularly on exposed concrete surfaces in urban environments.

At VariBlast, we carry out detailed quality control checks throughout the preparation and coating process - including DFT (Dry Film Thickness) readings.
DFT readings are a key part of ensuring that coating systems are applied correctly and will perform as intended over the long term. Once a coating has dried, its thickness must fall within a specified range to provide the required level of protection. If the coating is too thin, it may not deliver adequate durability or corrosion resistance. If it is too thick, it can lead to issues such as cracking and premature failure.

Great to see our team continuing to develop their skills, with a number of operatives now undertaking Train the Painter training at Bronze level.

This internationally recognised qualification is the foundation of industrial coatings training, covering essential areas such as surface preparation, coating application, health & safety, and quality control. It combines both theory and hands-on practical assessment to ensure operatives can work to the highest industry standards.

Investing in training like this not only strengthens our workforce but also reinforces our commitment to delivering consistent, high-quality results across all projects.

This is part of an ongoing commitment, with more operatives set to follow through the programme.

A project we started this year is now well underway, with works progressing efficiently on site in partnership with PPH Access.

Our scope of works involves the removal of existing lead-based paint from the structural steel. This process is being carried out with strict adherence to safety and environmental controls, ensuring the protection of both operatives and the surrounding environment while preparing the steel for its next phase of treatment. This project is moving forward at a steady pace, preparing the steel for primer, intumescent paint and a top coat in due time.

Throwback to our works at Wesley Camden.
Following off-site preparation and coating, this project continued seamlessly with installation on site. With the paint system completed in a controlled workshop environment, the steel arrived ready for immediate installation, helping to streamline the programme and minimise additional coating works once on site.
Our team remained involved throughout the installation phase, providing on-site quality assurance to ensure the coating system was maintained and met specification. By overseeing the process as the steel was positioned and integrated into the structure, we were able to ensure consistency, compliance, and a high standard of finish across the project. ✅
