Today, Ofgem confirmed that the UK energy price cap will rise by 13% from July 2026, adding around £221 per year to the average household bill and unfortunately, this is unlikely to be the end of it.

Most people are being misled about air source heat pumps.

You are either told they are the future of heating and will solve everything or that they do not work and are not worth having.

…Neither is true…

Heat pumps are just a heating system. A very good one in the right circumstances, and the wrong choice in others.

At Wise Green Energy, we see both sides of this every day. Here is the honest view.

What they do well:

• They are extremely efficient. You get far more heat out than energy you put in
• They provide a steady and comfortable background heat
• They are one of the most effective ways to reduce a home’s carbon footprint

Where they fall short:

• They do not heat a cold home quickly
• They do not suit every property without some level of upgrade
• They rely on electricity, which is still expensive

And here is the part that causes most of the problems.

You cannot treat a heat pump like a boiler. It is not a direct swap.

Electric Vehicle Update from the UK Government Budget

We have had a few customers ask what the recent UK Government Budget means for electric vehicles, so we wanted to share a clear and honest summary to help you plan ahead.

From April 2028, electric vehicles and plug in hybrids will begin to contribute towards road use through a new pay per mile charge. This is being introduced as fuel duty income reduces with more drivers moving away from petrol and diesel. The proposed rate is expected to be around 3p per mile for full electric vehicles and around 1.5p per mile for plug in hybrids. This would be in addition to standard vehicle tax.

The positive news is that electric vehicles are still significantly cheaper to run overall, especially when charged at home or alongside solar and battery systems. Even with this future charge, EVs remain far more cost effective than petrol or diesel vehicles for most drivers.

There is also continued support to help with upfront costs. Government funding for electric vehicle grants and charging infrastructure has been extended, helping to keep EVs accessible and practical for more households.

Another helpful change is that the higher rate vehicle tax threshold will increase from £40,000 to £50,000 from April 2026. This means more electric vehicles will avoid additional charges, particularly family sized and longer range models.

Salary sacrifice schemes also remain unchanged, with low benefit in kind rates confirmed until at least 2030. This continues to be one of the most cost effective ways for many people to move into an electric car.

Our honest view is that electric vehicles are still a strong long term choice. Lower running costs, reduced maintenance and the ability to pair EV charging with home solar and battery storage continues to make a real difference for many of our customers.
