A F Howland Associates Ltd

A F Howland Associates Ltd A F Howland Associates (Est. 1981) is an independent practice offering a specialist service in geotechnical engineering and related disciplines.

We have a broad based expertise in both soft and hard rock conditions for a variety of engineering situations which include roads and highways, tunnels, earthworks, slope stability, and foundations. We have traditionally provided management contracting for civil engineering investigations and have routinely undertaken projects in both the public and private sectors for individual construction proj

ects as well as major term contracts. In addition, we offer a full consultancy in geotechnics, as well the complementary disciplines of geo-environmental and hydrogeological engineering. Our particular philosophy of approach is based on providing practical engineering solutions. This has found particular favour with client organisations and contractors alike.

We are delighted to see how well Isabel Norwood (Izzie) has settled into life at A F Howland Associates since joining us as a Graduate Geotechnical Engineer in August.

Izzie has taken to the role of Graduate Geotechnical Engineer like a duck to water.  A Geology graduate from the University of Leicester, Izzie has already demonstrated a keen aptitude for geological interpretation, including reviewing geological maps, developing ground models, and logging a wide variety of strata. This week alone, she has enjoyed examining some impressive ammonite fossils recovered from Oxford Clay core samples during rotary borehole investigations. Izzie has also successfully completed her CSCS and AW training and is looking forward to attending a soil logging course with Equipe Training later this week to further strengthen the in-house training she has already received. We are delighted with the progress Izzie has made in such a short time and she is already proving to be a valuable member of the team.

We also asked Izzie for her thoughts on her first month with us:
‘In the past month since joining A F Howland Assosiates, I have had the opportunity to gain a range of new skills and knowledge on site, as well as in the office. On site I have carried out DCPs, Water monitoring, as well as observing window sampling and perc tests. In the office I have learnt how to enter logs into our Geodasy software and gained experience reviewing technical reports. I have also participated in training with both James Davies and James Ryan, whilst shadowing Seeraj Gohil on site. I have thoroughly enjoyed my first month with AF Howland Assosiates and look forward to the future!’

We look forward to supporting her continued development and seeing her build a successful career with A F Howland Associates!

Andrew Barks

25 Years of Dedication, Growth & Achievement!

We’re incredibly proud to celebrate our Operations Director, Andrew Barks, who has reached an amazing 25 years of service with A F Howland Associates Limited.

Andy joined us straight from university in 2001 and has been a true pillar of the growth and development of AFHA ever since. Over the past 25 years, he has progressed from Technician, to Engineer, to Fieldwork Manager, before being appointed Operations Director in July 2024.

His journey is a fantastic example of how starting at the bottom of the ladder, with the right attitude, commitment and hard work, can take you right to the top.

Thank you, Andy, for everything you’ve contributed over the past 25 years. You are amazing! 🌟

A few words from our Managing Director, Karl Blanke:

“I had the pleasure of studying with Andy way back at university, and our paths crossed a few times in our early careers. I have worked closely with Andy for the past 12 years, and you could not wish to have a safer pair of hands at your side.”

Congratulations, Andy, on an incredible milestone! Here’s to the next chapter. 🥂

From ground investigation to ground breaking!

After successfully completing the cost effective site investigations, it’s great to now step into the next phase, being part of the actual construction works. There’s something especially rewarding about seeing a project move from understanding the ground to shaping what stands on it.

And what better day for Richard Biney to meet the team and get things underway than on a day like this ☀️

We are looking forward to collaborating on site and seeing this project take shape, and we can help you too.

We’re thrilled to announce that James Ryan has rejoined A F Howland Associates Ltd after 7 years away, taking on the role of Senior Project Engineer based in our new Central office.

James originally joined us as a graduate and spent the first three years of his career developing his skills across a range of our projects. Since then, he has gained a wealth of SI contracting experience, particularly in delivering equipment into challenging, confined spaces and working within safety-critical environments.

In his new role, James will support our Associate Director, James Davies, bringing valuable insight and experience that will further strengthen our Central Office GI project delivery team.

Welcome back, James - it’s great to have you on the team again!

Michelle and Rosina had the privilege to attend the 1st BGA Women in Geotechnics (WiGeotech) Afternoon Tea at the Institution of Civil Engineers yesterday. In an industry that remains predominantly male, it was truly inspiring to hear the stories and experiences of other women in the field. The afternoon provided a fantastic opportunity to discuss how we can better retain and recruit engineers, all within the glorious surroundings of the Great Hall, and of course, over tea and cake!
