Future Health Biobank Europe’s first accredited family stem cell bank and UK Queen’s Award winner, Future Health Biobank.

Future Health started by storing cord blood stem cells in 2002 and within four years it had stored its 10,000th sample. Another five years on and the company’s purpose built cryogenic storage facility has over 50,000 stem cell samples for families from more than 45 countries in its care. A cord tissue storage service was added in 2009 and now services to capture cells from other sources identified

for potential medical use – such as dental pulp and adipose tissue - have been introduced with further services.

Stem cells have an amazing superpower — they can turn into different types of cells, helping the body repair and regenerate tissues. This ability, called plasticity, is tested regularly at Future Health Biobank to ensure your stored samples are of the highest quality for potential future therapies.

To do this, we take cord tissue and dental pulp stem cells and culture them in the lab with various chemical cocktails that are designed to make them turn into other cell types.

Graft versus host disease (GvHD) occurs when the graft (stem cells) react against the host (transplant recipient). This does not occur in autologous transplants, that use your own stem cells.

In addition:

* Transplants from sibling donors trigger less GvHD than those from unrelated donors, so that quality of life is better post-transplant.
* Research has shown that in stem cell transplants where only one donor cord blood unit is used, there is significantly less risk of GvHD for patients versus those undergoing a bone marrow transplant.

DEVELOPMENTS THAT INCREASE THE VALUE OF YOUR CELLS!

In 2023, the BBC published news of the first child in the UK to receive a kidney transplant that was assisted with stem cells.

The patient's immune system was reprogrammed using her mother's stem cells, prior to receiving one of her kidneys. Upon receiving the kidney, the girl's immune system recognised it as her own and didn't trigger rejection of the transplant.

A month after the transplant, the girl came off immunosuppressant drugs, which organ transplant recipients usually require for life. Advances like this could open up even more applications for stem cells
