The final whistle has gone. The celebrations are over. 🏆⚽
But did anyone else notice how much metalwork went onto the outside of that stadium? 🤔

The engineering behind it is on a huge scale. According to the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the MetLife Stadium is fitted with more than 50,000 linear feet (over 15 kilometres) of aluminium louvers forming the stadium’s outer layer.

Many school leavers will be starting in September, some even earlier. But what does a typical day look like for a ?

Not all fabrication training looks the same. Traditional fabrication skills remain an important foundation, but in modern workshops also forms part of the daily workflow. Here at Unifabs, apprentices gain experience across both areas, developing the practical skills needed for modern environments.

We caught up with one of our apprentices to find out what he’s been working on recently.

Samuel is a Level 3 Metal Fabricator Apprentice at Unifabs. At the moment, he is focused on developing his welding skills, learning new techniques and gaining hands-on experience with robotic welding systems.

Since beginning his apprenticeship, Samuel’s role has progressed from linishing parts to working as a robotic welding technician, building and running jobs independently.

A typical day starts with setting up equipment and aligning priorities with his supervisor before moving into production work. Throughout the day, Samuel works on robotic welding jobs while continuing to develop his welding techniques alongside experienced colleagues.

We asked him if he had any advice for someone just starting out on their apprenticeship journey. His answer was simple:
“Take your time and ask questions. This allows you to soak up all the information and develop it into your own techniques.”

As his confidence has grown, Samuel has taken on increasing responsibility and independence. From set-up and preparation through to running production jobs and working with automated systems, he’s gaining exposure to both traditional fabrication skills and modern manufacturing methods. That combination of traditional fabrication and modern automation is becoming increasingly important across UK manufacturing.

We also asked him what he’s enjoying at the moment:
“Using the robots. Learning to use the controls was hard, but I got full training and it’s really rewarding when you see everything running smoothly in production.”

That focus on consistency and repeatability is one of the key strengths of robotic welding. The next generation of fabricators aren’t just learning how to weld; they’re learning how fabrication works across both manual and automated processes.

Equipment lists don't tell the whole story when choosing a sheet metal partner.

Many established sheet metal fabricators offer a similar range of core capabilities, including CNC laser cutting and punching, press brake folding, welding, powder coating and assembly.

These capabilities are important, but they only tell part of the story.

The real difference is how those processes are connected and controlled.

A component that moves through multiple stages of manufacture relies on more than individual machines. It requires effective production planning, communication between departments, quality control throughout the process and experienced teams who understand the challenges of .

Robotic welding or manual welding — which is the right choice?

In fabrication, it’s not a case of one method over the other. It’s about knowing when to use each one. Both have their place, and the decision usually comes down to the job itself.

At Unifabs, if we’re running repeat production work where consistency and volume matter, robotic welding comes into its own. It helps reduce variation and keeps output predictable when you’re producing the same component repeatedly over time. But not every job suits automation.

For more complex work, repairs, or components that need more hands-on adjustment, manual welding is still the best approach. It provides a level of flexibility that a programmed process can’t match.
